Take Me to The Brow Studio

Perhaps one of the most important parts of our face is the eyebrows. They frame our face and can make us look young or old, depending on the shape. So, it is a must that we groom them properly. Unfortunately a lot of us do not know how to do it that we sometimes tend to get tweezer-happy. We have to be very careful with overplucking our brows because it can cause them not to grow again.

I was born with thick, black brows. While I never had any difficulty shaping them since they looked fine as they are, my main problem is they can get pretty bushy if not maintained. When this happens, I let professionals do it for me. So when a friend of mine invited me to try out The Brow Studio’s services at the SM North The Block branch, I agreed without hesitation.

Brow Studio (2)

When I got there, I was greeted by the lovely interiors. Yellow and violet are two of my favorite colors–they remind me so much of ice cream hehe (mango + ube, anyone?). I’ve always been curious how threading works so while waiting, I watched some of the staff do it on a few bloggers.

The Brow Studio is owned by Kristine Rochelle “Teng” Tobillo (pictured above), who opened her first branch in Eastwood on November 10, 2010. The Brow Studio now has 10 branches nationwide. It is the first FIlipino specialty salon to cater to eyebrow grooming needs, according to Ms. Teng. She sat with us to discuss some tidbits about her salon and what makes her salon different from the others–one of which is the Brow Rx. It was fascinating to me because I have visited several salons that offer eyebrow threading services and they do not have this.

Discussing the Brow RX

Before the threading process, the skilled staff at The Brow Studio would assess what eyebrow shape is suitable for the client’s facial structure and features. Afterwards, they would show the client’s perfect brow and which one needs rehabilitation. Fortunately, my brows did not need much shaping because apparently, according to one of the staff, I’ve shapen them correctly already. Yay for me! The only things they needed to fix are the small stray hairs and the point where my brows should begin, so yeah–threading time!

Did I mention that The Brow Studio only uses 100% imported anti-bacterial cotton thread? Also they would always check up on the clients to see if the pain is manageable. Luckily for me, I’m quite used to waxing and threading so the pain was tolerable.

See the difference? My brows are now more defined and less ‘sabog’. It felt like my whole face lit up after the procedure. What do you think? Afterwards, the staff showed me how to care for my eyebrows and which side I should maintain using the Brow Rx.

Thank you, Tin! She advised me not to wet the threaded area for at least 4 hours after the procedure. It’s easy to see growing hair after so it’s best to pluck them to maintain the shape.

We also had a small chat with Ms. Teng after the event. I was really curious about the yellow stick she held out earlier so she told us more about it. Seeing that her customers’ main complaint is their thin brows, Ms. Teng decided to create this product called Brow Vitamins that help grow thicker brows.

Brow Vitamins

While I do not need it, my relatives and friends have genetically thin brows and they always had to use pencils to make them look thicker. I’ve seen so many hair-grower products but some of them don’t seem to really work. However, Ms. Teng’s customers at The Brow Studio swore to the effectiveness of the product. She even showed us before and after pictures that her clients posted on Facebook! You can get the Brow Vitamins for only P425.

Note: If it’s just possible to put NEGATIVE STARS on this review, I would. They DON’T even deserve a one-star rating.

I availed their IPL package for underarm but I wasn’t even able to finish the said package which is composed of 8 treatments. Why? Here’s my experience:

After my last treatment, I was able to observe some red spots but I just ignored it for awhile because this usually happens after the treatment. It’s like the skin is reddish in color but it’s usually a normal reaction of the skin after the IPL treatment (this also happens after waxing). However, weeks have passed and the skin’s discoloration have returned to normal but the red spots turned to Brown spots. I ignored the brown spots for awhile hoping that it would eventually fade, but it didn’t. IT TURNED TO DARK BROWN SPOTS. That’s the time I was alarmed. Almost 4 weeks of skin recovery, I took a step and used Vitamin E. After a few days, the dark brown spots became smoother (they were very dry before) and the spots became a tad lighter (The color before resembles a dark chocolate. Yes, that’s how dark it was) but it’s still VERY NOTICEABLE. I’ve done my research and I was able to verify that those DARK BROWN SPOTS WERE BURNT MARKS FROM THE IPL TREATMENT. Ironically, The Brow Studio even told me that Vitamin E was the culprit why I have dark brown spots on my underarm (I’m a medical course graduate and I specialize in medicine so I’m very knowledgeable what actions should I take and I’m very sure that Vitamin E doesn’t darken your skin, particularly armpits.)

I tried to contact The Brow Studio and they told me to go to their branch which I did and they told me they’ll just keep in touch and update me because they’ll call the main office first. I waited for days but they never contacted me so I decided to go there again to check if there’s an update, but I got nothing. They just told me to wait because the supervisor is not there, (I went there twice but THE SUPERVISOR IS ALWAYS “NOT THERE”) they’ll still contact the main office, etc.

To make the long story short, THE BROW STUDIO DON’T CARE IF THEIR CUSTOMER HAD BURNT MARKS AND WASN’T ABLE TO FINISH THE PACKAGE FROM THEIR IPL TREATMENT SINCE THEY ALREADY GOT THE FULL PAYMENT. I tried to text them, go to their office, and text them again but they didn’t seem to care. The last time I texted, they DIDN’T EVEN REPLY.

    Would I recommend their treatment?

NEVER. NOT IN A MILLION YEARS. But if you want your underarms to resemble a Dalmatian, be my guest. And also, their IPL TREATMENT IS NOT EFFECTIVE. The underarm hair is still the same 100% (addition of dark brown spots which are burnt marks).

P.S. I went to the dermatologist and asked about the burnt marks and they told me I would be needing to undergo some treatments. All in all, I would be spending 10,000 to 18,000 just to have my armpits the way they used to be.

    • Hi, Lysa. I’m sorry you’ve had a bad experience with The Brow Studio. ๐Ÿ™ I don’t know much about their IPL treatment so I don’t have anything to say about it. Not sure if you’ve read my post but this was about their eyebrow threading procedure–and I must say it’s one of the best. In fact, I’ve been going to The Brow Studio twice a month since August of last year for their threading and waxing services and I haven’t had any problems.

I hope, though, you were able to speak to someone about what happened to you.

I’m not sure if you know or if you gave them your consent, but, they are using your pics as a model in their store in sm the block. I’m not sure for other outlets. Jusft FYI. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Ah yes, I modelled for them last year. Every branch has it. ๐Ÿ™‚
