5 Reasons Thrift Shopping Is Awesome

Every year, we generate more than 70 billion pounds of textile waste. Since many of these textiles are made from synthetic materials, they stay in landfills for more than 200 years – that and other billions of clothing from previous years. When I stumbled upon this information, I could not help but feel partly responsible for this problem.

When I was younger, I thought following trends and having the latest in fashion are “cool”. But when I realized it’s not helping the planet at all, I made it my mission to help reduce waste by shopping at thrift stores as much as I can. And it’s the best decision I’ve made so far.

Transition

I do not share much about my day-to-day life on social media. While I do share posts that make me laugh, sad, and inspired and occasional strikes of vanity, only a few loved ones know what’s going on with me. There are many things though I keep to myself only. I’m a bit of a loner, and always been like that–there’s a sense of satisfaction one can find in solitude. I am free to do whatever I please, without outside pressure and learn from the consequences of it. Having this frame of mind and the challenges I experienced as a child, prepared me mentally and emotionally for that place I call ‘the real world’, that world beyond the reach of anyone or anything that would discourage me from pushing forward and pushing beyond my limits.
IMGP2268A lot of things have happened since my last personal post. I’m still having backaches every once in a while. My doctor has advised me to not put too much pressure on my spine, hence I’m not allowed to carry heavy loads and wear high-heeled shoes often. Unfortunately my condition is irreversible. I’m not sure how this will affect my future travels, but I am doing everything I can for this not to worsen so I’m keeping my hopes up. Also, I found a new job in a new city. Right now I am still adjusting and learning the ropes, but I do have a good feeling that everything will be smooth-sailing. New workmates are amazing and full of positive energy, which I really like. I love being with funny co-workers because they make the job less tedious. I’m honestly very thankful to God for blessing me with wonderful jobs for the past three years, so much so that I no longer dread the word ‘Monday’. 🙂
IMGP2344And like any other office, air conditioning can be very brutal so I am yet again stocking up on some comfy knits and sweaters. Rainy season has begun as well. I know this look is not exactly a rainy season color–I kinda feel guilty for not sharing any outfit the past summer so I hope this suffices, along with my next posts. Plus, I’m having a hard time transitioning from happy summer hues to dark, gloomy shades. Cold weather is nice but I absolutely hate getting wet and bringing an umbrella!
IMGP2287Also, school break will be over soon and in a few weeks I’ll be my usual cranky self, but I won’t be abandoning this blog. I may be posting less often but that’s only because I’m ashamed to show you my eyebag-laden face only my boyfriend can love. Lol. Kidding aside, this semester will be pretty hectic as I’m expecting more reading assignments and reports but I will make sure to post one look a week. If this doesn’t happen, feel free to call me out on Twitter or Instagram.
IMGP2315By the way, thank you to my friend JoeAnn for taking my pictures! It’s her first time to use my camera and take pictures for my blog and I must say she did an awesome job. 🙂

Shop Branded Apparel for Less

Who doesn’t love branded clothes? They are chic and trendy, but unfortunately come with a high price tag. Brands like Forever 21, Zara, Topshop, and Mango are just some of the many in demand high-street brands in the country. However, most of their items cost a thousand pesos and above, an amount that only the upper middle class and rich people can afford. Fortunately for people like me who are always on a tight budget, there are online stores that offer authentic apparel for half the original price or less—one of them is The Overruns Store.430012_278286178910886_2105158440_n

I found out about The Overruns Store four months ago on Facebook. I’ve always wondered before where all the unsold items from boutiques go. Forever 21, Zara, and the likes may be big brands but I know not all manufactured items get sold out. Through research, I discovered that these unsold items, called excess overruns or stock lots, go to warehouses and are being sold at a very low price, sometimes at 90% less than the original price. Resellers would then buy these excess overruns and export them to interested buyers in other countries. People would often call them as export overruns as well. The Overruns Store is one of the most trusted sellers of export overruns in the Philippines, with more than 20 thousand followers on Facebook and almost 50 thousand followers on Instagram. It’s where I also got most of the high-street clothes I wore on some of my previous blog posts.

I love Forever 21 and The Overruns Store provides the prettiest Forever 21 pieces, even though they were originally released two or three seasons ago. I haven’t met the seller personally yet, but I think she’s young and knows what teens and young adults want. I mean, there are literally millions of excess overruns and those include items for mature women. If the seller doesn’t have a vision of what her customers need, chances are she’ll just sell whatever’s available. But the TOS owner is not like that. 🙂

TOS stocks run out quickly because thousands of girls eagerly await for every post of new items from the store. You will have to be very patient when waiting for confirmation of your order. Other than that, you don’t have to worry about anything else. The items are in very good condition, usually priced beginning Php 250 and above. That’s a great steal! For a thousand bucks, you can get at least four branded apparels. Not bad right?
