DIY Faux Leather Racerback Crop Top

I was bored with my life again last night that I decided to make something for myself. It’s been more than a month since I last sewed something and I missed doing it. Been catching up on Project Runway episodes, too, and I got really inspired by the contestants’ designs.

I wanted to do something simple, not too ambitious, so I chose something from my Fashionary sketching notebook—a racerback crop top. I bought this faux leather at the Fabric Warehouse for 250php a yard. I bought 2 yards because I’m planning on doing lots of stuff with it. This is only the first.

Anyway, here are the things you’re going to need:

fabric (1/2 to 1 yard)

pattern paper

scissors

black thread

measuring tape

needle (if you plan on hand sewing)

sewing machine (if available)

Next is to make a pattern that looks like this. The left photo is the left side of the front top. The length of the top depends on how long you want it. I wanted a 16-inch top and added 1 inch for the hem. My bust size is 32 so I estimated I needed 10 inches, 0.5 inch seam included. This measurement was actually quite big and I had to remove one inch on each side for it to fit perfectly. I measured 3 inches for the shoulder with 0.5 inch seam included on both sides and on top.

Please note that this is a pattern I made based on my measurements, you will have to add or deduct some inches to fit your body.

After making your pattern, fold your fabric lengthwise with the fold facing you, as shown, and cut.

This is how they should look like after cutting.

Next is to sew the shoulder. Flip the fabric, with right sides facing each other. You can also hand sew this if you don’t have a sewing machine.

Then sew the waist.

Afterwards, I would recommend fitting your top to check if the breast part is not too loose. In my case it was, so I had to make a seam to make it fit. To do this, measure 4 inches from the armpits and 7 inches from the highest point of the shoulder. Mark the point where they meet…

And from that point, draw a small right triangle, then pin it. And sew that area, as shown below:

Next, hemming. It is optional, but if you want a more polished output, then by all means hem away. 🙂

This is how your crop top should look after. Trimmed the back a bit to make the cross look more pronounced. And yes, I will definitely wear this on my next OOTD post.

Models I Stalk

When I was kid, if I’m not watching foreign TV series or animes, I ogle at the models taking the catwalk at FashionTV (FTV). I clearly remember how envious I was of their lean bodies and legs that go on forever (for obvious reasons). From that same TV show I first saw Gemma Ward, who at the time was only a mere 16-year-old.

Gemma Ward

Ward in San Francisco, 15 March 2007

Ward debuted in Australia fashion week when she was only 15, and after a year, found herself walking in Prada, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, and Calvin Klein. Her baby doll features inspired the fashion world so much, helping her become the youngest model to ever appear on Vogue alongside 2004 supermodels.

Currently, Gemma Ward, now 24, has taken an indefinite leave in the modeling scene and began pursuing an acting career. Three years ago, she became the talk of the town when she gained weight, which probably caused her to leave. I still love her, nonetheless.

Coco Rocha

I first heard of Coco Rocha when she modeled a Project Runway contestant’s winning jumpsuit. I was completely in awe at her poses as I have never actually seen anyone do those stuff in action. Her shots were featured in a Marie Claire billboard on Time Square:

Just look at those poses and faces, I mean, who does that? Apparently, Rocha, 23, does this quite often, which probably explains why she is so in demand at the moment. The industry refers to her as “The Queen of Poses.”

Sasha Pivovarova

When I first saw her, my initial thought was: “Gemma’s back!”

Apparently not, although Sasha and Gemma are always talked about online for looking like twins almost. Sasha, now 27, began her career about five years ago. Upon signing with IMG models, Prada immediately presented her with a three-year contract.

Along with Coco Rocha, Chanel Iman, and other models, this Russian model was featured in Vogue magazine cover titled “The World’s Next Top Models.”

Karlie Kloss

On the runway for Diane von Furstenberg, Spring 2009

Karlie Kloss became a legit model when she was only 14 years old (O.O). I know right. Currently 19 years old, Karlie has already walked for hundreds of high-fashion labels, among which are Givenchy, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Versace, Valentino, etc.

I like her for her quirky, fun attitude most especially when she walked for Victoria’s Secret last year. I didn’t exactly expect to see her there, but it was nice.

P.S. I know I failed to update my blog again. I couldn’t fit this in my crazy schedule at the moment. I apologize. So I made this quick post just to let you guys know that I might be “off the radar” (sort of), until the end of the month. You can follow me on Twitter though, I sometimes type absurd things there. Hoho.

The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards

I was so busy lately and I didn’t find out until yesterday that the Grammys had concluded. Lady Antebellum’s Need You Now won Record of the Year. I couldn’t agree more, you know. It is indeed one hell of a song.  There is a lot of buzz arising regarding Eminem losing over The Suburbs for Album of the Year, and Justin Bieber over Esperanza Spalding (I know what you’re thinking, I don’t know her either.) for Best New Artist.

To know the complete list of winners, check here.

Of course, awards night is never complete without the display of gowns and tuxedos. I don’t know much about men’s fashion, so I’d rather talk about the ladies. Below are my top 5 picks:

5th: Kathy Griffith. Yellow is a lovely color. Suits her.

4th: Selma Blair. I would want to wear that dress even if I'm not pregnant.

3rd: Heidi Klum looking chic and poised in Julien Macdonald

2nd: Jennifer Hudson. Oh Versace, you never fail to impress me!

1st: Nicole Kidman gets my vote. Wearing a floral Jean Paul Gaultier, she is definitely ready for spring. I particularly adore its fade effect.

Musicians, I think, are the most creative people in the entertainment industry. They come up with seriously hilarious stunts and surprises. And this won me hands down:

Do you recognize her? It's Snooki Polizzi of Jersey Shore! Her antics annoy me, but when she graced the red carpet at yesterday's Grammy's, I was in utter shock. The girl can definitely pull off a sophisticated look, yo.

But yeah, even Snooki was no match for The Fame Monster:

Where on earth is she?

Lady Gaga was inside that giant translucent egg. Reminded me of The Emperor’s New Clothes only that she wasn’t naked. It was reported she didn’t come out of the egg until her performance. Grand entrance, eh? This is what you call thinking out of the box.
