NIVEA Face Affair (Words & Photos)

You must have read in my previous post that I won NIVEA Philippines’ Face Affair contest last year. Thousands of girls submitted their entries online to NIVEA, with the hopes of becoming the Nivea girl. Who would have known that a small town girl like me would be picked? Bicolanas represent! 😛

My housemate and I took this photo in our room using my GE digital camera. I didn’t go for the usual posy photo. I thought, since NIVEA carries skin care products, the photo should show the product. I’m a big fan of beauty shots, so I opted for a tube top and a barely-there make up. I’m only wearing baby powder in this photo, some lip gloss, and eyeliner. The important thing is I’m able to present the product well.

As part of becoming the Nivea girl, I won over 14k worth of NIVEA products. If I have kept these for myself, I would have had a year’s supply of skin care products. But I didn’t. As long as I have a facial wash, toner, moisturizer, and hydrating lotion, I’m good. So where did the rest go? To my loved ones, where they should rightfully be.

I also got 15k worth of Forever 21 gift certificates and 6k worth of Majolica Majorca make up. I’m a happy girl indeed.

Part of my prize is a makeover and a photo shoot. Dominique Tiu styled me; Marj Sia did the make up; Val Chua fixed my hair; Crissey Si provided skin care tips; and Shai Lagarde gave points on confidence and personal development.

Pioneer Studio, the location, has lots of interesting decorations. I was particularly interested with these B/W photographs of what look like women from tribes.

Photograb: With Marj Sia, the makeup artist. She has amazing hands, I tell you!

Took a photo after wearing the items that Dominique Tiu personally hand-picked for me.

With my favorite blogger/graphic designer, Crissey. I only became fully acquainted with fashion blogging around 2010, I kid you not. And her blog and Tricia Gosingtian’s were the first ones I discovered. I followed them since then, and their blogs became my daily newspaper. So you could imagine my excitement when I found out I won and that I’ll be meeting her. <3 Thank you, Miro for the photo. I owe you big time.

And so the finished product has arrived. The Face Affair was just recently published in Chalk Magazine June 2012 issue, with the pogi Zac Efron on the cover:

And on the Chalk Bulletin’s bottom half, you’ll find my big face, with the wonderful bloggers who helped me look good that day.  I’m forever grateful to them. They, as well as the people from NIVEA (esp. Mikki Galang), have made my year unforgettable.

For a girl like me who grew up in Naga, a small city in the Camarines Sur province, seeing one’s own face in a national magazine is priceless. I was only a collector of teen magazines before, and everytime I buy an issue, I always wished to be in its pages. So I included it in my life goals, and now it’s here. It’s always great to dream and create goals–they motivate you, and drive you to achieve things you’re not even aware you can achieve.

Lastly, thanks to those who have supported and congratulated me. It’s not really a big ad, but your support definitely made me feel like I’m a supermodel. Haha. Thanks, guys! <3

Videos will be released online soon. Like NIVEA Philippines’ Facebook page and click the Face Affair tab to know and see more about the event.

Skin Care for the Night Owls

Health and skin care is probably two of people’s top concerns when working at night, or popularly called as the “graveyard shift.” I’m no doctor or dermatologist, but I have always been very careful when it comes to my skin, facial skin at least. This year, I accepted a job that requires me to work at night. I edit articles for a US-based company, so naturally I have to comply to their working schedule. My first month was a tad difficult, as I had to adjust practically my whole life—sleeping and eating schedule, skin care regimen, time for peers/family, etc. Before signing the contract, I already researched for the harms that my new schedule could possibly inflict on me and some ways to prevent them. Just imagine how difficult it is when one’s body clock which is programmed (for more or less two decades) to work in the day and rest at night is forcibly altered.

Okay, enough blabbing. Haha. Perhaps one of the unpleasant effects of night shifts is skin aging, and eventually the appearance of eye bags, dark circles, wrinkles, and acnes. Sad, I know. Fortunately, the maarte in me found solutions for those problems:

I have shared repeatedly that great skin always starts with clean skin. Before doing anything else with you face (yes, both before and after putting on make up), always wash it with facial foam that is suitable to your skin type.

There are five basic skin types [source]:

1. Oily– if you have large pores and frequently get blackheads and blemishes

2. Combination– if you have smooth skin, medium pores, and is slightly oily in the T-zone

3. Sensitive– if you have thin skin that is prone to allergic reactions and rashes

4. Dry– if you have tight skin that is prone to flaking and wrinkles

5. Sun-damaged – if you have tight skin with visible wrinkles

I have combination skin type so this acne oil control facial foam from Nivea is just perfect. Afterwards, tone  to further cleanse your skin.

Now the last step is quite tricky. Before, I would just wear a regular moisturizer. That was when I had a “regular” life. But since staying up all night can leave undesirable circles and eye bags and speeds up skin aging, I’m now using a special range of products from Nivea. We don’t wanna look 40 when in reality we’re just 20-something, do we?

I’ve read numerous reviews about how excellent this eye cream is, and I must also say that I’m pretty satisfied with it. I’m nearing my fifth month as a night owl worker and I don’t have dark circles yet, and I look fairly the same as last year. I now have eye bags though, but unfortunately creams can’t mend that problem (but I heard tea bags work wonders). But hey, at least I don’t have dark circles and wrinkles.

Now for the rest of the face, I wear the day cream before going to work and the night cream before sleeping. I read somewhere that the skin absorbs moisture much faster when we’re sleeping.

That’s probably the reason why night creams are thicker than day creams (as seen above).

Retaining your skin’s moisture is vital in maintaining a younger-looking skin. It’s not necessary that you use the exact same products. I just think that some night owls who complain they are looking older and stressed tend to neglect their skin’s needs. Really, the 3-step process (cleanse, tone, and moisturize) is not really that taxing.

Also, aside from the 3-step process, us people who work at night should always be wary of the food we eat and our sleeping schedule. Nothing beats a balanced diet and enough sleep. The 3-step process is just ancillary. Ciao! 🙂

Grazie Mille Giveaway! :)

As you know, I recently won Nivea Philippines’s Face Affair contest. Part of my winnings, aside from a makeover shoot (that will happen really soon) and Forever 21 and Majolica Majorca goodies, are thousands of pesos worth of NIVEA products. How awesome is that?

It’s my first time having boxes (literally) of skincare products, that they would actually cover one whole year of my skincare needs. But then again, I got these items by luck and the only way to show my gratefulness for all the blessings I’m constantly receiving is to share them with family, friends, and co-workers. 🙂

I just finished making my list, and I don’t know to whom I could give these last few items:

Can you help me? 😀

NIVEA Visage: Face Affair

I have been a NIVEA user since college. I admit though that I had used other brands to check out if it has the same effects as NIVEA. Unfortunately, they don’t.

L-R: NIVEA Visage Sparkling White Acne Oil Control Facial Foam, NIVEA Extra Whitening Deo, NIVEA Express Hydration Body Lotion, NIVEA Visage Refreshing Toner

Day and night I use NIVEA Visage Sparkling White Acne Oil Control Facial Foam. It has 2x smaller molecules which clean deeper into pores, thus preventing acne and revealing fairer skin.  Living in a polluted area, e.g. Manila, can be quite harmful to the skin, so this facial foam is my best friend. After cleansing, I would use NIVEA Visage Refreshing Toner to further cleanse my skin. This toner helps make skin look invigorated and refreshed. Unlike other products, NIVEA’s toner is very gentle. In fact, I sometimes do not use a moisturizer after because my skin does not look and feel dry after application, which is at times the effect of toners on some skin.

NIVEA Extra Whitening Deo has been my buddy for ages! I just realized that. Hihi~ I’ve tested quite a number of deos and nothing gave me the result that I wanted, only NIVEA. Lastly, I also use NIVEA Express Hydration Body Lotion which absorbs in seconds and moisturizes the skin for hours. It is great for people with dry, red, rough, tight, flaky, dull, itchy, and peeling skin. Cool, huh?

Last October, NIVEA Philippines started this online contest called Face Affair, where loyal NIVEA users can submit a photo of themselves with the new Sparkling White Acne Oil Control. Coincidentally, I just bought the same product. My housemate and I didn’t know what to do on a lazy weekend so we thought of joining. I had lots of troubles submitting my entry as the application on NIVEA’s Facebook page cannot seem to accept my photo. In the end, I gave up.

Until four days ago, I received an e-mail from NIVEA stating that I have won the contest! Turns out they received my entry. Yipee! 🙂

Now,  everyone calls me NIVEA girl. HAHA. I don’t mind. Hey, it’s NIVEA no! Might as well own it. HAHA. Apart from the 35k worth of NIVEA, Forever 21, and Majolica Majorca products that I will be receiving, I am also very eager to meet the country’s top bloggers, namely Crissey, Dominique, Shai, Marj, and Valerie. I have been following their blogs for quite a while now. They have inspired me to start a blog of my own since I like sharing bits of my life to people (yes even to ones I barely know). Ah, I can’t wait for my makeover! 😛

Make sure to stay tuned for the biggest affair in January. Photoshoot with NIVEA and my fave bloggers soooooon! Like NIVEA Philippines’ Facebook page if you haven’t!

P.S. Thank you, guys, for the overwhelming support! I seldom get that number of likes in my posts. Hahaha. Big thanks also goes to my housemate, Dodon, who took my photo entry for the Face Affair contest!
