Island Girl

Recently I’ve been really busy juggling my time among work, school, and blogger duties, I barely have any time for myself. Other than food, my usual destressors are sleep, quality time with loved ones, and traveling. Would you believe that I actually have to schedule all of them just to get that much-needed break? Yes, even sleep. This trip to La Union with my housemates and friends was scheduled a month prior to our actual trip. You can imagine my excitement when the day finally came.

When asked about my favorite travel destination, the beach always tops the list. The idea of a man-made resort (aka swimming pool) has never really appealed to me since childhood. When my relatives would decide upon spending our family reunions in pools, I would daydream about spending my days in the beach instead. I just don’t get it. Who doesn’t like seeing the sea and the great blue sky? I think they’re the most wonderful things on earth, I will never trade the beach for any other travel destination.

Oh to travel and see the rest of the world! It has always been my dream but it was only in 2011 that I got around to doing it. That year was when Chad and I became a couple. After being friends for more than a decade, fate finally nodded in our direction and permitted us to be together. (Wow, that sounded so cheesy but I can’t help but be all mushy when I think about our history together haha!) I didn’t expect that this guy who I loved since I was 13 is the same person who would eventually help me begin fulfilling some of my dreams. I learned to be more spontaneous because of him. During our first two weeks as a couple we embarked on our first trip to Zambales without much planning. It was scary for me because before, I avoid uncertain situations. I always had to know what’s coming so I can prepare. That attitude of mine often snuffed the fun out of things, it became a bit tiresome. Things changed when Chad came into my life. After Zambales, we visited a number of surfing spots in Luzon such as Daet, La Union, Baler, and Ilocos.

He taught me how to ride a surf board and skim board. I got some bruises in return, but the pain was no match for all the amazing stuff I experienced. And then I realized, we cannot learn if we don’t unlearn a few things. My fear of the unknown, that sense of wanting to be in control all the time has always prevented me from experiencing wonderful things. So I’m extremely grateful for the people who’ve encouraged me to just relax and go with the flow. It’s kinda surprising how I, Chad, and my friends have developed similar temperaments, especially when it comes to traveling. I am still fighting the urge to plan everything, but I think I’m getting there.

Sometimes I wonder why we castigate people so much for changing. For me, change is fine as long as it makes you a better person. I would rather be different, in a positive way, than get stuck to the same immature, self-destructive person that I was. Coming to Manila in 2010 made me discover things about myself, career, and life in general. Since I’m far away from my family, I needed to develop a thick skin but at the same time be more open to my loved ones. I used to keep all my problems to myself when I was still in Naga, which only worsened every situation.

And then one day four years ago, after a horrible breakup, I decided I will be better. Change takes a lot of courage and determination. We sometimes get too comfortable with the person that we are now, but I’ve learned that if I want to make my life worthwhile I have to improve myself. That attitude has helped me and my loved ones in so many ways, and that’s enough reason for me to keep on developing as person. What other people say about me is irrelevant.

So go live your life to what you think is best. If you’re not stepping on anyone while on your journey to a better you, then by all means continue. πŸ™‚

Travel Post: Vigan

Two months ago, Chad and I traveled to north of the Philippines to check out Vigan. Chad had been to the place but I haven’t before. I only knew about Vigan in textbooks in school and as my family could not afford to travel anywhere, except my parents’ hometowns which are just an hour away from Naga, I promised myself that I will visit Vigan when I’m capable of traveling.

I have a certain fascination for ancient things, and Vigan suits that interest of mine. Although I was a bit disappointed that only one street, Calle Crisologo, preserved the Spanish colonial houses and architecture, the whole experience was still amazing. I am after all with the love of my life, everywhere with him is paradise. CHOS! [On an unrelated note, I think I should shift to love + personal blogging because I keep talking about my boyfriend. I hope it doesn’t annoy you (heh). I can’t help it, so please bear with me. πŸ˜› ]

After a 9-hour ride to Vigan via Viron Transit, we checked in RF Aniceto Mansion.

Aside from offering the best accommodation package (1500php per night = breakfast + airconditioned room + private hot/cold bath + cable tv + clean and comfortable room), the place has a gorgeous interior. And if you’re a vintage junkie like me, you’d absolutely love Aniceto.

Our room. Nice right?

Aside from checking out Calle Crisologo and the restaurants along it (pictures of which can be found here), we also went to Baluarte, a large park owned by Ilocos Sur’s incumbent governor, Chavit Singson.

The place has a lot of animals–from donkeys, parrots, deers, to tigers. I don’t really know what to feel when we got there. I don’t like it when animals are used for humans’ amusement. I feel so sorry for the donkey that carried us quite honestly, I kept on talking to the poor thing after he gave us a tour of the field. πŸ™

Had some photos taken with this gorgeous parrot, too. The owners won’t ask for payment but they will certainly ask for a small donation after they’ve let the bird rest on your shoulders.

Chad decided to climb this big rock while on our way to see the famous pets of the governor.

I saw about six of these cuties. I kept calling them kitty in this video because they look so cuddly and cute, like domestic cats. They must be extremely bored and sad; these animals should be in the wild with their own kind, not in cages.

We also went to see Playa de Oro beach, which is only 10 minutes away from the city. Our travels are incomplete without the beach, you see. The place is very underdeveloped, which is good in my opinion. I saw some trash lying around near the shore though. πŸ™ And I think promoting it for tourism will only hurt it.

Chad left for the States a couple of days ago. I’m sad to be honest with you, which kind of explains why I’ve not been posting anything for the past weeks. I’ve been with him almost everyday during his 8-month stay in the country, but I guess every good thing has an end. It’s just temporary in our case, though. We’ll see each other in a year or two. We’ve done this long-distance relationship thing before. We survived it, and I see no reason for it not to work this time.

Holga Series: If You Steal My Sunshine

So this is it, the last set from my Holga series. If you haven’t seen the first two, you can check them out here and here.

When I saw this dress from an online shop called Runway Dreams on Facebook, I knew this was the perfect dress for a beach date. The color looks fun and the cut is very feminine. It looked really amazing whenever the wind came. We we were able to capture it on video here.

The sun was beginning to set when we took these. I feel a mixture of admiration and sadness whenever the sun sets. It’s one of the most beautiful things on earth, but at the same time it signals the end of the day. We become limited by the darkness (heck, we couldn’t even see the shore properly). But then again, it assures us that light will always follow.

I got tan lines, yo! See that? πŸ™‚ I guess it’s farewell for now, my dear ocean. Chad and I will be back soon.

Now I got my post title from this 1999 song by Len. I know it’s not the most wholesome song (although it doesn’t sound like it), but it’s trippy and I looove it. I hope you do, too!

Holga Series: Sand in My Shoes

Hi! These are just some photos from the second set that was shot with a Holga lens. I am still amazed how the lens captured the light whenever I look at these photos. You may not see my face very clearly, but I do not want it to be the focus this time. I’m pretty sure you’re already annoyed seeing my face anyway, hoho.

If you are a frequent visitor of my blog, you’d remember this dress. It’s not a crime to wear things multiple times, you know. I’m not born with a silver spoon in my mouth, so why pretend having endless supply of clothes? Just saying. Besides, this is one of my favorite dresses but instead of heels, I opted to pair it with my trusty (and dirty) Vans sneakers, because obviously I cannot walk on the beach wearing 5-inch stilettos.

Now isn’t that just marvelous. I seldom see that kind of light and sky in the city. I think that’s the whole point of travelling and visiting places–to appreciate the work of nature.

I was so happy to finally see the ocean that I sat on the shore like a child and started filling my shoes with sand. Lol

Obligatory blogger outfit shots πŸ˜› Make sure to come back soon for the last set of my Holga series. I promise you the last one’s going to be purrrty! πŸ™‚
