5 Reasons Thrift Shopping Is Awesome

Every year, we generate more than 70 billion pounds of textile waste. Since many of these textiles are made from synthetic materials, they stay in landfills for more than 200 years – that and other billions of clothing from previous years. When I stumbled upon this information, I could not help but feel partly responsible for this problem.

When I was younger, I thought following trends and having the latest in fashion are “cool”. But when I realized it’s not helping the planet at all, I made it my mission to help reduce waste by shopping at thrift stores as much as I can. And it’s the best decision I’ve made so far.

A Look Back at 2016 and Ahead to 2017

This post is two weeks too late but — happy new year everyone! I caught the dreaded “superbug” on the first week of 2017, causing a lot of work to pile up. I’m not a very superstitious person but that doesn’t sound like a very promising start of the year. Having said that, I’ve had worse so no amount of misfortune can ever stop me from working on my goals.

Yuletide Breeze (Plus Giveaway 2.0)

For a few days, I thought the cold winter breeze had finally descended upon Florida and I wasn’t sure if I would be thrilled or not. My joints began to ache like I was 90 (haha) and laundry day became more frequent than ever (mind you, the temperatures here are not even remotely close to those up north). The only consolation is I finally get to layer without being judged. That’s a fair bargain, I guess. 😛

Afternoon at The Ringling Museum (Plus Giveaway!)

This has been the busiest December of my entire life. I have so many tasks to accomplish before Christmas eve and I’m not even halfway done. Life has been throwing me curve ball after curve ball lately and I haven’t even had the time to breathe and take it all in. So one day, when my hubby and I finally had an opportunity to relax, we decided to visit the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida last Monday. I wasn’t interested at first because I thought the place looked like a circus (literally) since it was named after The Ringling Bros., who were owners of one of America’s largest circuses. I was wrong, of course.

A Day in Hyde Park

Lately I’ve been wondering how people perceive me. I know many of you will say that other people’s opinion of you should not matter, but for someone who doesn’t know her own personality very well–it is a big deal. When we were still dating, Chad used to say that the reason he was drawn to me was because I was so mysterious. Even today, he still can’t quite figure me out. Of course, he knows my little quirks but he can’t seem to box me in one character. I’m so unpredictable, he would always say.

Dodecanese Boulevard, Tarpon Springs

Here is the second half of our Tarpon Springs photos taken mostly on Dodecanese Boulevard. This section of Tarpon Springs is filled with colorful brick-walled shops that look like something out of a film set. No wonder they chose the district as the location for the movie Beneath the 12-Mile Reef in 1953.

Tampa Bay Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2017

While browsing the web a couple of weeks ago, I found out that cities in the US like Tampa and Orlando have their own fashion week. I used to cover Philippine Fashion Week so discovering that was pretty exciting. I hurriedly emailed the organizers of Tampa Bay Fashion Week about the possibility of gaining access to this exclusive event. Luckily, they still got two seats left for the September 23 runway show so Chad and I got to see the new designs to be released in spring/summer 2017 (Thanks, Nancy!).

Every year since 2008, proceeds from the shows go to charity. This year, the beneficiary of #TBFW2016 is PACE Center for Girls, an organization that helps girls and young women build a better future through education, training, and counseling.

Quite a number of well-known brands and designers participated in last week’s show. Check out the galleries down below to view their spring/summer offering!

The Colorful District of Tarpon Springs, Florida

Autumn has officially begun and I haven’t even finished posting all my summer stories. Hustling now so I can keep up with the influx of fall trends flooding my social media feeds. This is just half of the photos my hubby and I took when we visited the historic district of Tarpon Springs in Pinellas County, Florida.

South Carolina Stopover

Our first stopover on the way home to Tampa, Florida was South Carolina. While I was taking my master’s degree at the University of the Philippines, I studied American culture and literature, and the African-American history is one of many topics that fascinated me. And so, Chad and I decided to have a quick lunch in the historic town of Charleston and check out the nearby places while we were in the area. We drove through the amazing Ravenel Bridge, a cable-stayed suspension bridge over the Cooper River in SC that connects downtown Charleston and Mount Pleasant.

Topsail Beach, North Carolina

Everyone has that one place where they can just go and be happy. For me it has always been the beach. I can sit in the sand for hours and never get bored. There is nothing like watching the waves roll in and feeling the wind blow through my hair.

That’s why I never felt so happy and excited when my US visa finally arrived. I simply couldn’t wait to check out the beautiful beaches in Florida! My arrival to the United States was perfect timing because I made it to the annual family vacation in Topsail Beach, North Carolina, which is about 10-hour drive from Tampa, our city.

Fourth of July in Ybor City

I’ve been in the US for more than a month now. I’m still adjusting to my new environment and so far I’m doing okay. Florida weather is similar to the Philippines’ so I didn’t have a hard time acclimating. I don’t really miss the Philippines, but I do miss my loved ones and pets back home.

It’s now summer here but it has been really humid outside. I learned that during the summer, Tampa Bay often gets thunderstorms almost every afternoon, earning it the title “lightning capital of the US.” This city is well-known for thunderstorms that it even named its hockey team the Tampa Bay Lightning (a.k.a. Bolts).

Understated

White 1
This week has been absolutely chaotic. Aside from juggling projects, I also had to go back and forth to Makati for work and errands. I really can’t imagine living in the South. The traffic is terrible and many people always seem mad and in a hurry. I honestly don’t know how they can stand commuting to Makati everyday. It takes real guts you know, especially if you’re wearing all white.

White 2

I wore this ensemble to a meeting a few days ago. I bought this midi skirt last year but I never had the chance to wear it. Besides, I was in good spirits so I felt like dressing up. There’s something really elegant about this color, no wonder brides always prefer a big white dress for their special day.

White 3

Commuting wearing this color is a different story though. I was always on the lookout for stains. Thankfully, nothing happened. But during my trip I was able to reflect on a lot of things. I really like having lots of alone time because that’s when I study people and think about life. Also, when you’re stuck in a bus full of people eager to go home, there’s not much you can do. I wondered if Metro Manila’s traffic situation is ever gonna improve. It’s worse every year, even though politicians vying for public office always promise they’re gonna fix it every election season. Of course they don’t.

White 4

All we get are band-aid fixes instead of permanent solutions, because it’s easier to steal money that way. I guess what this country needs is not only an expert on law and economics, but also a person who has conscience and a pure desire to uplift the nation. But I don’t think that person is here yet. Every candidate right now seems to have a hidden agenda.

White 5

I just wish the voting public will be more discerning this time. The current surveys are not looking good, but I’m still hoping for the best.

Marooned

Publishing my first post after redesigning my blog! Have you noticed? I thought maybe Metamorphosis just needs a brand new layout to inspire me to write again. So far it’s working, I think. I managed to haul my ass out of the rut and forced my sister Denice to take my pictures. Hopefully this newfound excitement doesn’t wear off too fast, otherwise it’ll look like I’ve once again abandoned this blog. *crossed fingers* I hate how I easily lose interest in things, honestly.

3

If not for blogger events, I wouldn’t have anything to post here. But I realized my readers deserve better. So last week, I decided to redesign the website to start a new leaf, attended an event (my first this year), and started planning content. I already have 4 other blog posts in the works.

6

So what have I been up to lately? Aside from dealing with occasional anxiety attacks and mood swings, I have been editing manuscripts and writing a lot for two websites  since the new year began. Quite frankly, I’m not very confident with my writing skills, but I haven’t been let go yet so I guess I’m doing okay haha! Chad always tells me I’m a good writer but I just chalk it up to him being supportive and hopelessly in love with me hahaha! 😛

4

Shooting this set was particularly hard to do. It’s been a while since I did an OOTD post so I forgot how to pose properly for the camera (note the awkward smile below lol). It’s like I’ve become this entirely new person, as if I’ve never done countless photoshoots in the past. It’s weird how time changes you.

1

I feel like I’m in a phase where I truly know what kind of person I want to be, although I’m still in the process of figuring out how to be that person. I still like dressing up and putting on makeup every once in a while but they don’t feel as exhilarating as they used to be. Right now, I just want to have a simple, quiet, and happy life with my loved ones by my side.

Anyway, this is what I wore to the #LuxNights with Solenn Heusaff a few days ago. More on that in another post, so be sure to come back! 🙂

Taking Chances

As the year draws to a close, I cannot help but feel a mixture of regret and sadness sometimes.  I don’t feel I made good use of my time. I know that may be an exaggeration–pretty sure I’ve had achievements in the past months, but I can’t identify one that I can consider as the highlight of my year. I can’t remember an event that I can truly be proud of and say, “Hey, I did this!” or “I’ve overcome this.” All the issues that I’d been struggling with earlier this year are still here, which is odd since I’ve always had crisis periods but they would go away after a few weeks or months. Is it because I’m getting old?

Processed with VSCOcam with lv01 preset

I don’t think so. I don’t mind getting old at all. I honestly can’t wait to be married to Chad, my fiance, and make memories with him. What I don’t like is wasting time, and I admit that I’m very guilty of this. I question myself too much, which causes me to doubt my capabilities. What annoys me more is that I’m aware I’m doing this to myself but I’m not doing anything to reverse the situation. I used to be a very driven young lady; I knew what I wanted and did everything to get it. But 2015 came and BAM! I became a completely different person.

Holiday Dressing: Bleu à la Mode

Putting together an outfit is not that easy. Girls like me need a loooot of time to prepare, especially if it’s for a grand occasion. The holidays are upon us and that only means more family gatherings and social events. According to Pantone, this season’s most coveted colors by designers are earthy neutrals with a dash of bold hues that represent hope, fantasy, and all things natural.

blue

Photo: Pantone

Most of the colors are different variations of blue, which also happens to be a Christmas color. So why not choose outfits that have blue in them? There are already many stores online carrying holiday-themed dresses. If you are looking for well-made yet affordable finds, go local. ZALORA’s collection of blue dresses is absolutely gorgeous! There you will find different styles from various local retailers. Inspired by the above sketches, I’ve compiled four outfit suggestions below using items from different brands. If you want to see more of my sets, follow my boards on Polyvore!

Classic

Classic Elegance

If you are the conservative type, this is great for you. The slits of the dress are not too high, and the floral details on the sides are strategically placed to accentuate your curves. Since this is long-sleeved, you don’t need bracelets and other trinkets on your wrists–just a dainty necklace and matching earrings. Accessorize your hands with a gorgeous ring and clutch to store your phone and other abubots. Then, finish it off with these pointy pair of heels.

Comfy

Comfy Elegance

During holiday events, you meet a lot of people so you need to be comfortable in your outfit. If you are not used to body-hugging outfits, why not try a wrap-around or empire-cut dress? This won’t restrict your legs, allowing you to move around freely. Match it with ankle-strap heels for more support and an elegant white clutch.

Sensual

Sensual Elegance

On the other hand, if you are the adventurous type with to-die-for collar bones, this set is perfect for you. This dress shows off just the right amount of skin and hugs the body in the right places. Accentuate your outfit with a gold-tone onyx and lapis drop earrings and watch. Then pair it with ankle-strap black pointy heels for a more sophisticated look.

Chic

Simple Elegance

Honestly, if I were to choose from all the sets in this post, I would go for this one. If you are a floral dress type of girl (like me), this pretty dress is right for you. It’s made from neoprene so it stretches to fit any body type. You don’t have to worry about eating too much as it can tuck away the bulge. Pair it with a chunky heels and black shoulder bag so you can move freely. Match it with a blue watch and earrings to complete the ensemble.

JORD: Carving the Path to Sustainable Fashion

I used to hear the term ‘Sustainable Environment’ at school and read it on the news a lot, but I haven’t really given it any thought until recently. But with Emma Watson embarking on a new fashion challenge, which is to create a full outfit using eco-friendly brands, I have become more conscious of what I wear. We see pictures of the devastating effects of climate change online (even the refugee crisis the world is currently experiencing is an indirect result of it) so it is important that we rethink and re-evaluate our choices–and I’m starting with ACCESSORIES.

DSC_0622

Wooden watches are becoming popular nowadays but I’ve always hesitated on purchasing one because I’m concerned about their durability. Thank heavens for JORD for sending me this beautiful timepiece to review. The company is composed of artists, designers, and business professionals who create one-of-a-kind watches. Because the timepieces are handcrafted by skilled artisans and made of aged hardwood and quality automatic and mechanical movements, their products are built to last.

????????????????????????????????????

The watch box alone made me think of many ways to use it. Aside from storing my watch, it can also be a jewelry box or a place to put those little notes I get from friends. It’s really well made and I like that it is also crafted out of wood.

DSC_0631

I decided to match the watch with my new paisley dress. One great thing about neutral colors is you can pair it with almost anything. I chose the ELY Maple watch so I can use it for various types of outfits. It is surprisingly sturdy despite it being made of wood. The wristband has steel hinges so they won’t just snap. The enclosures are made of steel as well.

DSC_0596

But how about the sizing? JORD has a ruler which you can print to measure your wrist size. The ruler is pretty accurate and the instructions are very clear. I measured 16.5 and it fit perfectly when I wore it! I’ve already received several compliments from my boyfriend, friends, and family after they’ve seen me wearing it. It not only looks chic and sophisticated–it’s also environment-friendly! 🙂 The store also carries several styles and colors. They also have items for men.

DSC_0582

These photos were taken just outside a seminary in Naga. I’ve always wanted a picture there because the structures are pretty historic. The Cathedral, along with the seminary, was built during the Spanish occupation, and I am glad my hometown has preserved some of its treasures.

Casual Fridays: Blanc et Noir

Friday is probably the most anticipated day of the week. Many equate it to parties, road trips, dates, or movie nights. But to me it means comfort. Every Friday, I would almost always dress in jeans and shirt. It’s the last day of work so I guess I’m allowed to feel relaxed and unrestricted. For some working women though, office or client meetings often fall on a Friday. When that happens you don’t always have to stick to the usual corporate attire. Below are two laid-back outfit suggestions I have created just for you:

Black

Casual Days

Gone are days when the only allowed outfits for formal meetings are pencil skirts and blouses. Today, companies are no longer as stringent as before when it comes to dress code. As a result, many women have been experimenting with their looks and are more adventurous. One of this season’s hottest trends is the jumpsuit. It’s surprisingly comfortable to wear as it allows you to move freely without showing much skin. Pair it with a nice pair of black pointy shoes or strappy sandals with matching accessories and you’re now ready to close that business deal. Gold always complements black so I suggest wearing accessories with a hint of gold. ZALORA has a great collection of gold-colored jewelry that you can choose from.

White

White Balance

Like black, white never goes out of fashion. It immediately gives off that clean, cool vibe that’s why people love wearing this color during the summer. Lace cutouts are all the rage this season so you can try out this dress with lace detail. IMO white is a statement in itself so you don’t need to wear a lot of accessories. Gold jewelry with small, dainty pendants and designs are perfect. Complete your look with white or black pointy heels and you’re good to go. If you’re bold enough, you can also go for gladiator heels!

So which are you? Are you the jumpsuit or the dressy type? Spring-Summer 2015 has brought back some of our most beloved trends and styles. Feel free to check some of them here.

Check out my other boards on Polyvore.

Intermittent

By now you might have figured out that I’m not good at keeping my word. How many times have I made a comeback after a hiatus, and apologized for it? I can’t even count anymore, and I won’t be surprised that you have lost interest as well. Believe me when I say, though, that all these are unintentional. I’m not depressed nor have I lost interest in blogging, but I’ve reached a point where I began to question my purpose as a human being. I mean LIFE is doing pretty well. I’ve got a nice job where my skills are rewarded; I get to spend more time with my family now; and I’m getting married to the love of my life soon.

DSC_0470

In the past, when friends would tell me they’re not sure where they’re life is going, I would often say to them: “Everyone’s lost at 25.” And now, I can’t believe I’m telling myself this at 26. I thought I had it all figured out when I was 21, but I was terribly mistaken apparently. Some days I would catch myself reading articles about twenty-somethings on Thought Catalog and Elite Daily–something I swore off doing since they started publishing misogynistic, nonsensical articles written by self-entitled millennials. Other days I would just stay at home and reflect, which would often lead to more questions. Every week, my friends and fiance would ask me when I’m going to write again, to which I always answer with a shrug.

DSC_0424

I’ve had similar episodes in the past, but not as long and serious as this one. Have you ever felt envious of people who knew exactly what they wanted to be? I have. When my boss asked me a few months ago what my passion is, I couldn’t give an answer. All I was able to say is: “I’m still figuring it out.” At 26, I’m supposed to know already, at least according to society. Chad, my ever-supportive fiance, would often console me by telling that I’m not like most people. That maybe I’m not meant to have a single purpose, maybe I’m meant to do a lot of things.

DSC_0442

He could be right. I’m trying to embrace this idea; there are occasional self-doubts, of course, but they’re now much easier to overcome–thanks to friends and loved ones who have been with me throughout my (ongoing) existential crisis. They never asked, and I never said anything but they were there for me.

DSC_0440

Despite my intermittent absence, I still feel quite fortunate that brands like WALKTRENDY still trust me and my blog. WalkTrendy is an online street-style fashion retailer based in Hong Kong with a fulfillment center in the USA. They found my blog through Google, which is fantastic because that only means they do their research and not just base on social media followers. They reached out to me in April. I know that’s two months ago but it takes a really long time for overseas mail to get to my country. The WalkTrendy team has been really patient with me, and for that I’m extremely grateful.

DSC_0454

It’s already June but the heat has not subsided yet so I decided to wear this printed dress from WalkTrendy. It’s made of light, semi-cotton material so it’s perfect for the sunny weather. What I honestly love about this dress is the print itself. It reminded me of me a few years ago, when I was so in love with blogging and fashion. I used to go out with my hair in curls topped with a DIY floral crown or hat. That was also when my then-boyfriend-now-fiance was teaching me how to use a film camera. Good times, good times. 🙂

PS. To those who kept on visiting this blog despite the lack of updates (yes, I can see you), thank you for sticking with me. :*

Emerald

Hello! I know this blog was supposed to be posted two weeks ago but I got really busy and sick. Schlemiel me contracted some kind of infection, which left me ill all week. I’m not the kind of person who falls ill all the time. Maybe twice or three times a year, but not every month! Maybe time to re-evaluate my priorities? Something good came out of those two grueling weeks though–I realized I’m really fortunate for having the best and the kindest workmates and friends.

DSC_0172

Some of them covered for me while I was sick, and were genuinely concerned for my health. Being away from home for more than five years, I’ve become quite accustomed to taking care of myself–although every once in a while I would text my mom, telling her how much I miss the back massages she used to give me and my siblings everytime we’re sick. Sometimes it can get really lonely being alone, but that’s life I guess. At some point you have to leave the place grew up in and live in an unfamiliar city to actually grow as a person.

DSC_0156

Being in a strange place has its perks. When I arrived in Manila, I felt relieved. Finally I can leave behind all the bad memories and start a new leaf. I never knew anyone in Manila, save for my sister whose only address I know at the time. I and a college friend came with two big bags in each hands, traveled to Quezon City (a two-hour ride from my sister’s place) and looked for a room that we could rent. Our first months were not easy–our salaries were barely covering our needs; our room was too small for us both. We separated ways a year after and found myself living with three of my then-officemates afterwards.

DSC_0168

Many have told me how brave I am for leaving. Naga is a wonderful place, but I knew long before college that I’m destined for something greater, far greater than what people had set out for me. Maybe it’s because of my youth, but I’ve been like this for as long as I can remember. Add to that my dream school, University of the Philippines – Diliman, is just a stone’s throw away from where I’m currently living. As soon as I settled myself in our new apartment, I enrolled in a Master’s Degree program, got a nice new job, and met new friends.

DSC_0204

I remember when I was just starting out in the big city, I made a dream wall where I posted things I wanted to achieve in five years–tangible and otherwise. I’m about 95% done. Looking back at some of the obstacles I faced, I think I deserve a pat on the back. For taking risks and facing the consequences after. For failing many times, but never giving up. Now I’m pretty much satisfied with what I have–really awesome friends, enough ‘resources’ at my disposal, and I’m marrying the love of my life. Things may have not started off right, but as they say–your end is always better than your beginning. Just hang in there. 🙂

Mad Love

My friends and officemates often ask me: Do I ever feel sad? And I would answer with a resounding yes, but I try not to dwell on it. I always tell myself that no one else is responsible for my emotions but me. I can tell the whole world about my feelings but no other person can resolve it but me. While growing up, I have also discovered that negative emotions can be contagious. I want to be that person who’s a constant source of positive, happy energy. Each of us has our own struggles, and I don’t want to be that friend who always brings bad news. I do not want to inconvenience anyone by listening to rants and problems that (probably) do not concern them.

DSC_9894a

My mom has taught me and my siblings to be independent. When we were kids, she would often talk to us about taking responsibility. As a child, I did not understand it then. I thought my mom was being too serious and ‘baduy’ by having those talks. I didn’t realize how much those talks have permeated my daily existence until today. Scoldings from parents do have a purpose after all. Sometimes I’d wonder if I can become an effective parent like my mother, especially now that I’m nearing that stage. 🙂

DSC_9896a

A few weeks ago, Chad and I got engaged. YES WE’RE ENGAGED!!! 😀 😀 😀

I choose you @gypsealegs ????????

A photo posted by Daphne Benosa (@dafnyduck) on

Although having kids is not one of our current priorities, just thinking about it can be overwhelming. Seeing a little Chad and Daphne playing some day would be great, but we still have a lot of things to work on as a couple. Chad and I have had many talks about this in the past, even before announcing our official engagement, and I’m glad to have a partner who possesses the same line of thinking as I do.

DSC_9895a

Many people think that when you get married, you can no longer have time for your own dreams. I disagree. That may be true for couples with kids but not for married couples. Chad and I still have lots of things to fulfill. More than a year ago we collaborated for several creative projects and realized how compatible we are, not just as boyfriend-girlfriend but as partners. We accomplish so much when we’re together and manage to weed through the challenges of long-distance relationship—these and many other things convince me that Chad and I will make it.

DSC_9891a

Not that I need any convincing. I’ve loved Chad since meeting him more than a decade ago and nothing will ever dissuade me from marrying him. When he left for the States when I was in college, I totally gave up hope that I’d still see him. But he came back in 2011–and it was the right time. I’m not one to believe in ‘The One’ (oh boy, here we go), but that moment, our first conversation after so many years, I knew then he’s the person I’d marry. Just thinking about Chad and our future makes all my worries go away. My officemates have remarked about my blooming aura since becoming engaged and I have to say it’s all because of the love I constantly receive from Chad, my family, and friends.

When you focus on how much you are loved instead of how unfortunate you are, it will show. It’s all about perspective. 🙂

Island Girl

Recently I’ve been really busy juggling my time among work, school, and blogger duties, I barely have any time for myself. Other than food, my usual destressors are sleep, quality time with loved ones, and traveling. Would you believe that I actually have to schedule all of them just to get that much-needed break? Yes, even sleep. This trip to La Union with my housemates and friends was scheduled a month prior to our actual trip. You can imagine my excitement when the day finally came.

4

When asked about my favorite travel destination, the beach always tops the list. The idea of a man-made resort (aka swimming pool) has never really appealed to me since childhood. When my relatives would decide upon spending our family reunions in pools, I would daydream about spending my days in the beach instead. I just don’t get it. Who doesn’t like seeing the sea and the great blue sky? I think they’re the most wonderful things on earth, I will never trade the beach for any other travel destination.

IMGP2796

Oh to travel and see the rest of the world! It has always been my dream but it was only in 2011 that I got around to doing it. That year was when Chad and I became a couple. After being friends for more than a decade, fate finally nodded in our direction and permitted us to be together. (Wow, that sounded so cheesy but I can’t help but be all mushy when I think about our history together haha!) I didn’t expect that this guy who I loved since I was 13 is the same person who would eventually help me begin fulfilling some of my dreams. I learned to be more spontaneous because of him. During our first two weeks as a couple we embarked on our first trip to Zambales without much planning. It was scary for me because before, I avoid uncertain situations. I always had to know what’s coming so I can prepare. That attitude of mine often snuffed the fun out of things, it became a bit tiresome. Things changed when Chad came into my life. After Zambales, we visited a number of surfing spots in Luzon such as Daet, La Union, Baler, and Ilocos.

IMGP2848

He taught me how to ride a surf board and skim board. I got some bruises in return, but the pain was no match for all the amazing stuff I experienced. And then I realized, we cannot learn if we don’t unlearn a few things. My fear of the unknown, that sense of wanting to be in control all the time has always prevented me from experiencing wonderful things. So I’m extremely grateful for the people who’ve encouraged me to just relax and go with the flow. It’s kinda surprising how I, Chad, and my friends have developed similar temperaments, especially when it comes to traveling. I am still fighting the urge to plan everything, but I think I’m getting there.

Sometimes I wonder why we castigate people so much for changing. For me, change is fine as long as it makes you a better person. I would rather be different, in a positive way, than get stuck to the same immature, self-destructive person that I was. Coming to Manila in 2010 made me discover things about myself, career, and life in general. Since I’m far away from my family, I needed to develop a thick skin but at the same time be more open to my loved ones. I used to keep all my problems to myself when I was still in Naga, which only worsened every situation.

2

Decided to ditch makeup, so here’s my bare face. 🙂

And then one day four years ago, after a horrible breakup, I decided I will be better. Change takes a lot of courage and determination. We sometimes get too comfortable with the person that we are now, but I’ve learned that if I want to make my life worthwhile I have to improve myself. That attitude has helped me and my loved ones in so many ways, and that’s enough reason for me to keep on developing as person. What other people say about me is irrelevant.

3

So go live your life to what you think is best. If you’re not stepping on anyone while on your journey to a better you, then by all means continue. 🙂

#IXUSStyleSelfie with Canon

The earliest known photograph was captured in early 1800s. Us millennials think we owned the ‘selfie’ trend, but our forefathers actually beat us to it. It was them who demanded for portraiture in the 1830s, which lead to mass production of the daguerreotype—paving the way for further development of photography. Cameras back then were huge, and we’re quite lucky that we are living in an era where everything is just the size of our palms.

IMGP2729

And I’m quite thankful to companies like Canon for producing cameras that are not only high quality but also ergonomic. I have really small hands and it’s very difficult for me to use DSLRs that are twice the size of my hands. However with the Canon IXUS 265 HS, capturing moments and portraits has become so much easier. This camera has an Image Stabilizer and Intelligent IS preventing photos from looking blurry. It’s also light on the hands (a major plus for me) enabling my fingers to easily position it and click the capture button. If you like taking ‘selfies’, I’m certain you would appreciate IXUS 265.

You guys know that I’m not currently allowed to bring heavy backpacks. This camera is so small, it doesn’t take much space in my already tiny shoulder bag. I brought it in a restaurant a couple of days ago; also took a photo in the office yesterday:

IMG_0128

One of the problems I often encounter when using cameras is how to set them up. Talk to me about exposure and aperture and I would immediately explode. I have difficulty absorbing technical information, I just rely on instinct (and luck) when taking pictures. And most of the time, most of my photos especially the indoor ones would end up either blurred or so gloomy that even Photoshop cannot repair them. So while I was checking out the features of the camera yesterday at my favorite steakhouse I took a few shots to test its indoor, lowlight capabilities and these are the results:

IMG_0148
IMG_0150

Apparently, the Canon IXUS 265 HS has a Smart Auto feature that allows amateurs (like me) to just point and shoot and not worry about the settings. My pictures turned out to be really clear and un-pixelated even though the place was not well lit.

Having a camera that captures moments clearly is important for me as a blogger. When people visit blogs, they expect that posts contain well-taken photos. I’m not the best blogger out there but here are a few things I do in capturing the best portraits:

1. When I take selfies, I make sure I look good but not too made up. I just want to look fresh and clean, like I just woke up. I put on some translucent powder and my baby pink blush and lipstick and I’m good to go.

2. Next, I check which side of my face is my best angle. I like showing my full smile so most of my photos are taken from the front.
IMG_0162a

3. And lastly, I find a well-lit place. In this case, it’s my kitchen and I snap away with my camera! Make sure you use a quality camera like Canon IXUS 265 — it comes with a selfiepod too!
IMG_0155

Don’t forget to have fun with your camera!

Thank you Canon for giving me the perfect selfie companion, Canon IXUS 265!

How to Choose a Flattering Neckline for Your Wedding Dress

Apart from the silhouette of wedding dresses, it’s important to pay attention to one detail of a dress: the neckline!

For many brides, the neckline is usually not a priority. However, the neckline is important because it holds the chest and provides comfort. A wrong choice of neckline can bring discomfort during your big day and an unbalanced silhouette, as well as affect the dress’s visual appeal.

To select the best neckline for your body type, consider the size of your bust and the ratio between your hips and shoulders. The following are some examples of necklines from Rosanovias.com.au.

Heart Neckline

The heart neckline is the most popular among the ladies. It is sweet and romantic, the reason so many brides prefer this type of cut. It emphasizes the chest region, making it perfect for women with small to medium bust size. Chesty women should avoid this neckline as you run the risk of pulling the dress up all the time.

That annoying armpit flesh? If you’re one of those brides who do not like it showing, consider having sleeves or wide straps to hide that area.

image002

Straight or Round Neckline

The straight neckline suits women with large bust because it reduces the visual weight in that region and provides good support. However, you must be careful of not making the cut too low or it beats the purpose. Women with small breasts should avoid this cut since it further reduces the bust size. But if you really want to have a straight neckline, make sure to add volume to the bust area using drapery fabric, pleats, or ruffles. Firework beading also adds to the illusion of a larger bust.

TIP: Chesty women must be careful not to “close” the neckline too much as it further enhances the bust.

The distance between the shoulders and hips is also a thing to consider. Women with broad shoulders and small hips should opt for necklines that narrow the shoulders. Straight, canoes, or shoulder-to-shoulder necklines increase the width of the shoulder and are only advisable for those who have narrow shoulders.

image004

Cleavage Canoe

The boat neckline is very similar to shoulder-to-shoulder (see below). The difference is this type of neckline is very close to the neck and has a deep cut. This cut reduces the neck and silhouette (petite women avoid this style). It increases the neckline and shapes the breast, making it perfect for women with small bust. Those who have medium bust should exercise caution in choosing this cut.

image006

Shoulder-to-Shoulder Neckline

The shoulder-to-shoulder neckline went missing for a time in bridal fashion. Today it’s again one of the most popular choices among women. Like a deep canoe, it also increases the bust area, ideal for those with small to medium breasts.

Brides with wide hips who want a balanced silhouette must choose this neckline. If you have an hourglass figure, you can play with this neckline at will, unless you have a large bust.

This is an excellent neckline for brides with boho-chic style. This design creates a modern and sophisticated look.

image008

V-neck

The classic V neckline is fitting for women of all sizes, but tends to flatter chesty women. If you have a small bust and want this kind of cut, consider adding some pads beneath the fabric or wearing a padded bra. It helps elongate the silhouette and make you look slimmer. The best part is, a slit complements this cut.

TIP: Some institutions may not allow low-cut wedding dresses so remember to consult your local church regarding this matter.

Bicol’s First Art x Fashion Magazine, AGORA, Is Launching Soon!

I lived in Naga City, Bicol for almost two decades. In all those years I’ve seen and met many people who are not only intelligent but are also very creative. Although Naga is one of the most prosperous cities in the region, there seemed to be a lack of venues for the thriving art community to showcase their work. Restaurants and bars have appeared like mushrooms in different parts of the city the last time I visited, but not once did I see a cafe filled with books, films, art pieces, or anything educational that the youth can actually learn from. Most people are either online or at a crowded place like Starbucks-Magsaysay, while only a handful of people would visit the art show at Avenue Square or attend the book launch of a nationally recognized Bicolano poet.

I’ve always had this dream for my hometown about a platform which my fellow Bicolanos could utilize to show their work. So when an old classmate of mine who is so passionate in promoting FIlipino culture and fashion pushed through with the idea, I was glad that finally that dream can now be realized.

10602982_10202837340874812_205889600_n

A Greek word meaning ‘a public place’, AGORA “was formed with the desire to showcase the best of Bikol and cultivate a sense of panache and a forward-thinking taste among homegrown talents with a local and global audience. AGORA Magazine is a non-profit online magazine dedicated to become a platform for up-and-coming Bikolano artists in the fields of Photography, Fashion, Beauty, Music, Literature, Film, Visual Arts such as Painting and Illustration, Theatre, Industrial and Interior Design and other fields of creativity.”

Here are a few of my favorites among the teasers posted on the magazine’s Facebook page:

10277484_244388425752496_1164657320514663813_n 10296138_253933591464646_2446117505444080229_o

The maiden release, called ‘The Paper Issue’, “looks into the paper as a weapon, as a tool, as a means for expressing creativity; and as the translated ‘papel’, we look into the roles we play in cultivating Bikol Art into a global, social community of acquired tastes.”

The best thing about AGORA magazine is it’s crowdsourced. If you are a Bicolano artist dying to show your talent to the online public, shoot the team an email at agoramagazinebikol(at)gmail(dot)com. AGORA Magazine is a tri-monthly magazine and accepts contributions in the form of Feature Articles, Fashion and Beauty Editorials, Photo Journals, Illustrations and Art Installations, Essays and Critiques

Step Forward

Warning: Senti post. Haha. With my birthday just a few days away, I figured I needed to blog about something more raw and personal today. How do you overcome unfortunate situations? The year has not ended yet but I’ve already experienced a series of ups and downs. Frankly, I’m surprised I’m still sane. If I were probably more weak-willed, I would have easily gone mad. But no, this girl right here has endured much more than you can imagine–and that’s not an exaggeration.

IMGP2379

Like most people, I get really terrible days, would lock myself in my apartment and think about why I’m experiencing such and what I could have done to prevent them from happening and what I can still do for them not to reoccur. When I was younger, however, I would get pretty self-destructive, but only for a while. I learned later on that it’s not a good way of dealing with problems. If we always try to escape every time we’re facing a huge dilemma, it will never stop. In the end, it will only create more problems.

IMGP2423

The past months were very emotionally exhausting, but one day, being the amazing partner that he is, my boyfriend told me the most wonderful thing. I am far from perfect but he said my best trait is I learn from my mistakes. When I was a kid, my mother would always remind me and my siblings the importance of chances, so I suppose I got that trait from her. Yes, I would often mope for a day or three, but I would certainly bounce back better and wiser. And I guess it’s because I give myself time to reflect. When we make mistakes, we are only given very few chances, if we’re lucky, of making things right so it’s important not to waste them.

IMGP2440

A lot of us can be quite reactive too when stressed and angry. While I do understand that it’s a way of “getting it all out there”, sometimes they cause more harm than good. You see, when emotions are high, our judgment is clouded by unpleasant things it’s impossible to be rational. So  when I’m in that situation, I would clear my mind first, ask for a time out before saying or doing anything.

IMGP2365

Even though I had numerous challenges this year I can say that I’ve successfully overcome them. Right now things seem to be going very well again for me. But you know, life never fails to find a way to shake us once in a while. But when you have a calm, positive disposition, you will always find a way to move forward. Keep in mind also that there are people who love us unconditionally, willing to listen and help. I’m honestly grateful for being surrounded by my wonderful family and friends. Although I usually keep my problems to myself, these people are always ready to cheer me up and support me when I need it. My boyfriend has unfailingly been my constant source of strength. This person is the only guy who took the time to really get to know me despite all the negativity surrounding us and I really appreciate that. The last time we were together was almost a year and a half ago (boy, time does fly) but we make sure to be ‘present’ for each other. I feel very lucky to be loved and understood by him. I honestly can’t wait to be with him again, hopefully before the year closes.

IMGP2430

My relationship with Chad and my family and friends are perhaps the only things that are consistently positive in my life. And that’s okay. I think, as long as we have love and positivity in our hearts, things will always work out. 🙂

Sunshine State

How is your community doing after the #GlendaPH typhoon? My area only got power back yesterday so now I can finally begin catching up on some backlogs. Some of us are lucky enough to get back on our feet, but we all know many towns are still reeling from the damages Glenda has caused, especially my hometown Bicol. There are many ways we can help. If you’re on Twitter, type the hashtag #ReliefPH and you’ll instantly see ways on how you can lend a hand.
IMGP2447
Filipinos are the most resilient people I know. Our country is visited by an average of 20 typhoons a year and they always leave billions of destruction and hundreds of lost lives, but we always bounce back from every tragedy. And that’s what matters. Unfortunate events are a fact of life, and while they cause us so much grief and heartache, we must continue to live our lives the best way we can.
IMGP2490d
I lost my father when I was 15. I was a daddy’s girl and losing him devastated me, but my mother showed us that dwelling on grief will do us no good. It took me a year after his death to finally recover emotionally. Now it only feels like my father is just somewhere, traveling the world, watching over me.
IMGP2543
If you would like to help #GlendaPH victims, here are some ways:

  • Volunteers are needed at DSWD’s National Resource Operations Center (NROC) at NAIA Chapel Road, Pasay City. You may contact: 02-8528081 or 02-8512681
  • Naga City, my hometown which was badly hit although recovering, is in need of volunteers who will pack goods. Donations are also accepted. Please call 054-4725462. You may go directly to the Congressional Office of Leni Gerona Robredo at Naga City Hall Compound, in front of Commission on Human Rights and Camarines Sur Medical Society.
  • If you have a phone and load, you can also send monetary donation via Red Cross by texting RED <space> AMOUNT to 4143 (Smart) or 2399 (Globe). You can donate the following denominations: Smart: 10, 25, 50, 100, 300, 500 or 1000; Globe: 5, 25, 100, 300, 500 or 1000.

It has been raining since July began and it’s a must that we’re always ready. My sweaters and long-sleeved tops have overtaken my entire closet. Knit sweaters can be quite expensive so I always look for preloved ones on Instagram. So far I’m loving my purchases. I find them by searching the hashtag #knitsweaterph by the way. 🙂

Transition

I do not share much about my day-to-day life on social media. While I do share posts that make me laugh, sad, and inspired and occasional strikes of vanity, only a few loved ones know what’s going on with me. There are many things though I keep to myself only. I’m a bit of a loner, and always been like that–there’s a sense of satisfaction one can find in solitude. I am free to do whatever I please, without outside pressure and learn from the consequences of it. Having this frame of mind and the challenges I experienced as a child, prepared me mentally and emotionally for that place I call ‘the real world’, that world beyond the reach of anyone or anything that would discourage me from pushing forward and pushing beyond my limits.
IMGP2268A lot of things have happened since my last personal post. I’m still having backaches every once in a while. My doctor has advised me to not put too much pressure on my spine, hence I’m not allowed to carry heavy loads and wear high-heeled shoes often. Unfortunately my condition is irreversible. I’m not sure how this will affect my future travels, but I am doing everything I can for this not to worsen so I’m keeping my hopes up. Also, I found a new job in a new city. Right now I am still adjusting and learning the ropes, but I do have a good feeling that everything will be smooth-sailing. New workmates are amazing and full of positive energy, which I really like. I love being with funny co-workers because they make the job less tedious. I’m honestly very thankful to God for blessing me with wonderful jobs for the past three years, so much so that I no longer dread the word ‘Monday’. 🙂
IMGP2344And like any other office, air conditioning can be very brutal so I am yet again stocking up on some comfy knits and sweaters. Rainy season has begun as well. I know this look is not exactly a rainy season color–I kinda feel guilty for not sharing any outfit the past summer so I hope this suffices, along with my next posts. Plus, I’m having a hard time transitioning from happy summer hues to dark, gloomy shades. Cold weather is nice but I absolutely hate getting wet and bringing an umbrella!
IMGP2287Also, school break will be over soon and in a few weeks I’ll be my usual cranky self, but I won’t be abandoning this blog. I may be posting less often but that’s only because I’m ashamed to show you my eyebag-laden face only my boyfriend can love. Lol. Kidding aside, this semester will be pretty hectic as I’m expecting more reading assignments and reports but I will make sure to post one look a week. If this doesn’t happen, feel free to call me out on Twitter or Instagram.
IMGP2315By the way, thank you to my friend JoeAnn for taking my pictures! It’s her first time to use my camera and take pictures for my blog and I must say she did an awesome job. 🙂

Finish Line

I’m back in Naga City to witness my brother’s graduation at Ateneo de Naga University. Everyone who knew us intimately knows why this is such a momentous occasion for our family. Despite his shortcomings (because honestly, who doesn’t have one?), my brother is the most selfless person I know; he sacrificed a lot for our family to survive–and I respect him for that. I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for his sacrifices.

IMGP1342

I could not recall how many times I felt depressed when things don’t go according to plan. I have this 10-year plan I drafted after finishing college–a list of things I should accomplish before I turn 30. 5 years have passed and I’ve only done about 20% of that list. Before I would often feel disappointed at myself for not being able to follow ‘the plan’, and it didn’t do me any good.

IMGP1332

Slowly I began to accept that life is too uncertain, it’s impossible for us to control everything. One person told me I should be thankful that at least I know what I want in life and that I’ve done something worthwhile with it. After hearing those words, I began to relax and take things less seriously and welcome spontaneity.

IMGP1335

If my brother was able to face life despite the fate he experienced, why should a simple mishap like derailed plans stop me from living?

How To Find The Perfect Tuxedo For Your Body Type

After popping the question, after giving the ring, and after receiving that sweet “yes” from the love of your life, the next set of things that you need to take care of are the wedding preparations. Unlike your would-be bride who is fussing day in and day out about her wedding gown, you have not probably thought much about what you are going to wear on your special day. After all, you must be thinking that all eyes are going to be on your bride anyway. Most experts in men’s fashion are going to tell you however, that you need to look equally as fantastic as your bride for your wedding day.

There are probably a thousand different things to think about when it comes to wedding preparations so it is crucial for you to find the best outfit to wear as early as possible. Comfort is of utmost importance when you are looking for a suit to wear on your wedding day. While there are a number of different suits available in boutiques and stores, you need to make sure that your outfit fits you perfectly.allure-slate-blue-zoom

Tips to help you find the right tuxedo for your body type:

1.) For the thin and slender men.

On your wedding day you would want to look fit and buff. Your tailor or your favorite Stroudsburg tuxedo rental savvibysarno.com will most likely recommend that you wear a double-breasted jacket. The shoulders on your jacket must be a little bit more padded than usual. The waist should also be taken in a little bit more as long as you still feel comfortable. When suits are made like this, it will make thinner men look more muscular and it will provide a great vertical line to make them look taller as well.

2.) For the tall and muscular men.

There are many popular Stroudsburg tuxedo rental companies that recommend that huskier men wear a shawl-collar tuxedo. With a smoother and thinner collar, you will feel a lot more comfortable and look a lot leaner. Make sure that the jacket provides you with enough length so that when your hands are relaxed at your side, your fingertips reach all the way to the bottom. A single-breasted jacket with just one button would be the perfect choice for you.

3.) For the short and stocky men.

1209S_SKINNY-ZoomThe shawl collar that is smooth and thin would also look great on you. Make sure that you ask your favorite Stroudsburg tuxedo rental company to give you a single-breasted jacket with a single button. The button should be placed around the beltline to give you an illusion of a longer and leaner torso. You can do away with padded shoulders because you would not want to look bulkier. If you have a wide neck, you should avoid wing-tip collars and very small ties. Make sure that everything in your tuxedo is well proportioned with your body.

The most important thing to consider on your wedding day is that you look good and feel good about yourself. Do not rush through the entire fitting process because you should feel 100% comfortable in your suit. Remember that a lot of photographs of you will be taken on this day so your suit should make you look like the dashing, elegant groom that you are.

This article was provided by the website savvibysarno.com, a local tuxedo rental shop that will help you look your best on your wedding day.

Earthy

I think one of the most difficult color to pull off is green. It’s a color that only suits some people. A dash of green here and there is easy, but an all-green ensemble is tricky. And you know me–my style is safe, plain, and minimalist. If I can avoid bold colors and styles, I would. But sometimes experimenting is good, how else were we able to identify the clothes that suit us if not for that little adventure at the mall or in our bedroom? So when Rosegal offered to send me a product for review, I chose the color which I’m not quite comfortable at wearing; after all I got nothing to lose.

IMGP1091

The package arrived about two weeks ago and this is what Rosegal.com said it would look:

201309161653158935

I chose the Zipper Sleeveless Simple Style Polyester Round Neck Women’s Dress because I thought it would be great for work. I’m not the pantsuit kind of girl; I like wearing dresses because they make one look very feminine. And this is how the product actually looks:

IMGP1111

The dress I received does not 100% look like the dress posted on the website, but nonetheless quality is excellent. The stitching was even, which is my primary concern when buying online, and has qualities that are similar to their claim, like the gold zipper at the back and the material:

IMGP1146

The only thing missing was the belt. It wasn’t mentioned on the website that the belt is not included so I assumed it is. Apparently not. Luckily, I have one that matches the dress perfectly.

IMGP1118

Rosegal dress | Vida sandals | Boutique de Reines bracelet | TMART ostrich bag | SM Department Store belt

IMGP1119

I might have chosen the wrong size as the waist part was quite loose. I think the dress would look more stunning if the skirt was more flared and the neck part more closed, like the one posted on the website. Other than those points though, the dress was pretty and very well made.

IMGP1148a

Also I realized after seeing the photos, green is not that intimidating–it’s the contrary actually, very refreshing. Sometimes we do have to risk some things in life in order to find what’s best for us. Without doing so, we are preventing ourselves from seeing all the other possibilities and opportunities the world can offer us–fashion-wise and life-wise. 🙂

PRODUCT RATING: 3.5/5 and +++ points for awesome customer service

Dress Up Sunday

I’ve been really stressed with school and work lately. So when the opportunity to travel presented itself last week, I grabbed it and packed my bags without much thought. I missed home, so much that I didn’t mind spending the weekend only there (usually when I visit, I clear my schedule for a week). Despite the short amount of time I spent in Naga, I was happy. Coincidentally it was my little sister Denice‘s birthday too and I never wanted to miss it for the world.

IMGP1045

I think we’re the closest in the family. When we were kids people actually thought we’re twins. But of course, like any other siblings, we’ve had our own share of squabbles–but that only made us closer. Until today we still borrow each other’s clothes, laugh at silly things, gossip, and spoil each other. I always thought of her as a fragile being, so I didn’t like seeing her hurt or sick–I still don’t, but I’m confident she can now handle every obstacle thrown her way. I can’t believe she’s grown to be a tough–and very stylish–young lady who is great at what she does. She also likes cameras so when I’m home she takes my pictures for my blog. 😉

IMGP1042

We took these photos at the iconic Basilica Pavilion located within Basilica Minore, home of the famous Our Lady of Penafrancia–Bicol region’s patroness. I’ve taken so many pictures for this blog but I only have very few from my hometown so this time I made sure I was able to take some before the Sunday mass began.

IMGP1051

Hence the people at the background. 😛

IMGP1064

Before we got there though, my sister was laughing at me because I looked too formal for church. Lol I’ve always been the most maarte in the family so they’re kinda used to me being so dressed up all the time. I was actually going to wear heels but I didn’t want to be teased again so I opted to wear my chic pointed flats instead just to balance things out.

IMGP1056

Didn’t wear much jewelry too because the collar already has gold sequins. Adding more accessories is overkill. And I’m not big fan of jewelry too, except for these gold earrings my dear grandma gave me for my college graduation years ago. 🙂

Must-Haves to Up Your Accessory Game

If the polar vortex has wreaked havoc on your personal style this winter, you’re not alone. Even the most debonair gentlemen had to go Eskimo at times, sacrificing style for clunky boots and full-body long-johns—anything that would bring some semblance of warmth. Now that the polar vortex is (hopefully) on its last legs, it’s time to thaw out and look ahead to some of the upcoming spring and summer trends.

When it comes to fashion trends for 2014, the devil is in the details. Once you’ve emerged from your puffy parka cocoon, you can focus on letting those details shine. Accessories are the perfect way to add personal flair to your outfit, especially in warm weather, and can serve a practical purpose as well. If you’re looking to win the accessory game this year, here are a few must-haves to consider.

military-watch-boxsetWatches

Unless you’re a Luddite, chances are your cell phone (or computer, or tablet) does a perfectly good job of telling you the time. So why invest in a watch? A bare wrist is like a blank canvas. You could leave it blank and call it art, or you could use the opportunity the canvas presents to make a statement about your style. It’s one of the few pieces of jewelry that a man can wear without looking like he’s trying to win a bling competition (Unless you’re wearing a diamond-studded watch that takes up half your arm, but we’ll leave that up to your discretion). You don’t need to break the bank to find the right watch either. A Rolex is great for some, but unless you have thousands of dollars to spend, consider a cheaper alternative. Look for something that matches and complements your personality. Smart Turnout is a British company that sells a variety of colorful, affordable watches and watch straps. Purchase a collection of watch straps and you can switch it up depending on your outfit. For a classic, non-flashy look, consider a vintage watch, even if it isn’t the most accurate time-keeper. Watches are more about style than function anyway. A unique, old-fashioned timepiece will be an elegant change-of-pace from your brethren who demand the newest brands. Heck, be bold and wear a pocket watch if the spirit moves you.

Socks

There’s no need to let your sock drawer turn into a quagmire of whites, blacks, and grays. First of all, those socks are drab. The only statement they make is that they’re utilitarian and plain. Not to mention that a pile of similar white socks is harder to match when folding laundry, and you have better things to do with your time. Dark solids are already well-represented in your wardrobe, so why not spice up your outfit with a dash of bright color, such as Nice Laundry’s collections? Robert Griffin III rocks some crazy socks, and you should too. Even if you work in a conservative setting, show the world that you’re not afraid to let your personality shine. A little uplifting color never hurt anyone. Build up your sock drawer with a range of patterns and colors. Polka dots, stripes, and bold patterns can match a range of outfits and will add panache wherever you go. Don’t let your otherwise chic style be brought down by boring socks. Take back this oft-forgotten frontier by being that style pioneer with crazy, cool socks.

urban-messenger-01Man Bag

Despite the fact that technology has consolidated most of the paper products of the world, it seems like we’re now inundated with an endless supply of high-tech gear to lug around.

Computers, tablets, cell phones, MP3s, and an endless supply of chargers and cables must be transported. These expensive items are certainly not something you want to lose or drop, so investing in a good man bag is a worthwhile investment. The Leather Shop makes a variety of high-quality laptop cases, briefcases, and messenger bags that can handle all your transportation needs. The leather bags look sleek and elegant so you won’t look like a college TA toting around a backpack. If you’re looking for a great way to organize all your chargers and gadgets, consider the Cocoon Grid-It. These cases feature a network of elastic bands that will hold any size gadget in place, and the entire organizer will easily slip into your new man bag.

Prom Perfect

I had my first prom in 2004. Like any other girl, I was excited to prepare for the event. Unfortunately it wasn’t the best experience. My dress was bland and my gay neighbor took it upon himself to shave my thick eyebrows until there was almost nothing left. Oh the horror! However, because of that awful experience I learned a few things and tricks. The next year I made sure I planned everything—from the dress to makeup. When the day of my senior prom arrived, I looked okay but it was a vast improvement from the previous year. I enjoyed the prom so much—partly because it was my last year and I was with friends, and I was comfortable with my look that night.

If I had a choice though, I would have had a dress made specifically for that occasion. Alas, I only came from a humble family and all we can afford is a rented gown. Butttt.. if you have money to spend, I do not see any reason why you should not plan on looking prom perfect. Since I’ve been there, below are some tips I can share on how to have the best prom evahhh!

1. Pick a dress that YOU LIKE. You cannot go to a party wearing your pajamas, so make sure to pick or design a dress that best suits your personality. There are a lot stores online that offer affordable and trendy dresses, like JenJenHouse and DressFirst to name a few. If I were to go to prom today, the following are the dresses I would likely chose:

jenjen

A pearl pink dress, because pink is a pretty, feminine color. Case closed. Just look at the details at the bust part. Gorgeous, aren’t they?

jenjen2

A gold dress with a beautiful cut at the back. Gold, when paired with minimal accessories, can make anyone look like a queen.

2. Do not sacrifice comfort for style. Prom means a lot of dancing and “chasing” your crushes, so a dress that will let you move freely can help you in enjoying the occasion at the highest level. An empire-cut dress is not very restricting because it doesn’t hug the pelvis and thighs, enabling the wearer to move about. The empire cut is also my absolute favorite.

jenjen3

3. Dare to be different. 95% of girls who go to prom wear long dresses. Be more unique by wearing something short or any cut that will show your gorgeous legs. This silver beaded dress has a beautiful mullet cut, plus the color is something that you don’t normally see in occasions like prom. Aside from that, this kind of dress is perfect for petite girls like me.

jenjen1

Silver can make anyone look like the Ice Queen ready to take her well-deserved crown.

So those are just a few tips I wanted to share. As for shoes, silver heels can be paired with just about any dress. Putting on some earrings, bracelet, perfume, and a simple makeup would be great too. Just remember not to wear too much. Minimalism is key.

And finally, the most important thing to remember is to be yourself. I know that sounds cliche, but if you keep on conforming to other people’s standard of beauty you will only end up unsatisfied and unhappy. Just enjoy the moment and let you inner prom queen shine! 🙂

Swimwear Trends for 2014: How Suitable Are These Swimsuits for Petites?

The secret is out, swimwear in 2014 is about being noticed, going out with a bang, and making bold moves. The trends sported at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim Show are refreshing in their cheeky audacity, while also bringing back the sexy of bygone eras (think Bo Derek in “10” or Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like it Hot”), with vintage/retro touches here and there. Do these swimsuit trends suit petites? Whether you’re a 32a cup or a 32d, the swimsuits on the catwalk can work for you too!

Swimwear Trend No. 1 – Black and White

Back to black was the theme of many designers’ offerings, with two-tone, high-contrast factor swimsuits, often in vintage styles (high-wasted and wide-hipped panties, etc.). From the heyday of Art Deco to its current renaissance, the pairing of black and white or pink  and other high contrasting colors has always had an enduring allure.

How does this look measure up for petites?

These styles can work for petites, if the particular woman isn’t more comfortable in a short-torso style. For petites with shorter torsos, they may not be as flattering as other styles. Style gurus say striped halter-style swimsuits would be especially flattering for petites, due to the way they elongated the form.

Voda_Corsica-String_CroppedSwimwear Trend No. 2 – Jungle-Inspired Styles

These looks are right out of a Duran Duran video – wildly 80s and not the least bit ashamed. Animals, banana leaves, and other jungle/rainforest motifs splash across swimsuits, tankinis, capes and sarongs.

How does this look measure up for petites?

In this case size does matter. Large animal figures, etc. can overpower the petite wearer, but a fetching alternative may be had in swimsuits with smaller prints.

Swimwear Trend No. 3 for 2014 – The Vintage-Inspired Swimsuit

Retro is so prevalent in fashion it could just as well be called contemporary and this is no less the case with the swimsuits coming out this year. Masterful use of retro brings vintage elements into the present, rather than merely mimicking them as they were in their original incarnations. Bows, polka dots, and other touches from the 40’s to the present are reflected in this trend.

How does this look measure up for petites?

Vintage works! Whether the woman is pixie or a veritable amazon.

Swimwear Trends No. 4 – 7 – Colorful Prints, Geometric Prints, Maxi-Length Cover-Ups, and Big Beach Bags

How do these measure up for petites?

For petites, colorful prints can work if the print isn’t too big; geometric prints that feature vertical or diagonal lines are surefire hits on petites; maxis with proportionate motifs can work for petites; and big bags are simply the practical choice when you’ve got a bunch of beach necessities – whatever your size.

Sexy White Shirt

One of the wardrobe staples every woman should have is a good v-neck white shirt. It’s simple, comfy, and can be paired with just about anything.

Yesterday I woke up 15 minutes before class and I didn’t have enough time to put an outfit together. I grabbed my cotton v-neck shirt from Sexy White Shirt, a matching skirt and flats.

IMGP0808

What’s great about this plain v-neck shirt, despite its simplicity, is it doesn’t make you look drab and dull. Whenever I see a person wearing one, I often think of her as someone cool and laid-back—two qualities that I really like.

IMGP0814a

I arrived at school past one o’clock; I was very late so I was frantically running along the halls of Palma Building. I was quite lucky to have unconsciously chosen this ensemble, it was so easy to move in. So what’s the lesson here? Make sure you have your most comfortable shirt and flats ready in case you’re running late for class. LOL.

IMGP0824

After that class I had to go straight to work. Obviously I could not come in wearing a mini skirt and flats, so I made sure I brought a pencil skirt and a pair of pumps.

IMGP0829

People don’t normally associate v-neck shirts with corporate looks, but I thought why not give it a try? I’ve always had this image in my head about pairing casual and corporate pieces. I’ve never done it until recently, so you can imagine my delight upon discovering they actually looked great together.

IMGP0831a

It’s probably because the look creates a balance between ease and formality, which is something that I always gravitate towards, style-wise at least. Not too flashy, but at the same time not too simple. What do you think about how I styled my sexy white shirt? 😛

Create Your Own Style for 2014

Many people struggle with creating their own style. They know what they want to look like yet somehow they aren’t able to transfer that look into their everyday life. Often the reason for this is down to a lack of confidence. Going against the grain of fashion and trends can leave you feeling vulnerable. We’re in 2014 now and there is no better time to take a stand and embrace the real you. Here are a series of tips that will help you to discover the style that really expresses who you are.

Start by Buying a New Notebook

What’s a notebook got to do with style? More than you think. Your gorgeous new notebook is going to be transformed over time into your very own exclusive look book; your task is to begin collecting images of things that you love in the fashion world. It could be models you admire, clothing and make up, anything that appeals to you. Begin cutting out pictures in magazines, print them off from Pinterest and other websites and start building your ideal image in the pages of the book.

You should also do some research into fashion. Read fashion websites and hunt down several fashion bloggers that really express the way you feel on their site. Head to the library too, start looking at past fashion and photocopy any images or even quotes that you respond to and stick them in your notebook too. Finally watch through some movies and pay attention to the characters that have a style and an air about them that you’re hoping to portray through your style.

Daily Photo Habit

While working on your look book begin cataloguing your wardrobe. Take a photo each day and paste them into your notebook (this is so much cooler if you have a Polaroid camera!). If you can’t print off your photos from your phone consider starting an Instagram account or keep them private in your gallery.

Ideally you should find a way to print them so you can place them in your book and write comments next to each look. Write down what you like and what you don’t like. Write ideas on how the look could be improved – perhaps your yellow belt would look better? Then try out your ideas on another day. Photos make it easier to visualise your style. You’ll learn about the way you’re dressing and it will teach you about accessorising playing with colours, shapes and proportions.

Try New Things

When you begin to gather some ideas on your new style it’s a good idea to begin trying things out. Obviously no one has the money to buy a new wardrobe of clothes just to test them out, so you’ll need to try and work out a way to do this without spending money. The best way is to find a friend with some pieces that match your look book image and ask if you can borrow some of her clothes for a week. That way you can wear them out and about and play around in front of the mirror and it won’t cost you a penny.

If none of your friends have anything suitable you can ask on free and swap websites or stick to trying on clothes in fashion stores. Make sure you try on complete outfits, everything including shoes and accessories. If you’re going for a vintage look or are trying retro get yourself into all the charity shops you can find and try clothes in there. You can even buy a few pieces as they won’t cost you as much.

Start Building Your New Look

When you’re feeling confident about your look book and new style it’s time to start buying things. Remember to think about what items are going to work together to make a complete outfit rather than buying a top without thinking what else you have or can get that will go with it. Remember the staple items too – you’ll want down time clothing like comfortable stylish shoes like Converse you can buy from retailers such as John Lewis, as well as dressing up clothing for business meetings and nights on the town. Work out what type of clothing and accessories you will need to maintain your brand new style while still being suitable for your activities and life in general.

With time, practice and confidence you can soon become the master of your own style. There’s no need to stick to what’s hanging on the racks on the high street, be adventurous and true to the real you.

Chinese New Year 2014 Outfit Ideas

The Chinese New Year is almost here and you can see it everywhere, which is no surprise since the Philippines is composed of approximately 1.5 million people with Chinese blood. In the world, China is considered the country with the largest population, so it’s just natural that the world celebrates with them in occasions like the Chinese New Year.

What’s more exciting about this event is the outfit that people wear. We often see people wearing different shades and styles of red, as it is considered to be the Chinese’s lucky color. They believe that it attracts favorable luck and fortune. However, this year’s feng shui (Chinese philosophical system) said that red is not the only lucky color this year. This is amazing news for those who are not fans of red.

Chinese New Year 2014

Linea Italia Alysi Halter Backless Top | Chictees Leggings

According to fengshui.about.com, green and brown are also some of the lucky colors. 2014 is the year of the Wood Horse, so green and brown are great complements. For illustration purposes, I went to Lazada Philippines shopping website. Girls are usually expected to wear dresses, but if you want to be more adventurous, try wearing some pants and matching it with a nice black dressy top. According to feng shui experts, black can still bring good luck in 2014 so yay for us!

The next thing to consider are the accessories. Believe it or not, but the color of the accessories you’re wearing can also affect your luck, that is if you believe in feng shui.

Chinese New Year 2014 accessories

CELINE Eleanor Stiletto Sandals in tan | Ted Lapidus Women’s Watch | David Jones Zeva Wristlet | Vince Camuto Gold-Tone and Black Stone Geometric Double Drop Earrings

Lazada is currently having a Chinese New Year sale, so I headed there to look for some affordable accessories. Crystals and stones like black onyx, pearls, moonstone, etc. are great for 2014. It’s best to avoid Metal elements like white and gray during the festivities.

So there you have it. If you feel like experimenting with your outfit this year, you can try out the suggestions above. If it doesn’t work for you, then you can always go back to red. Hope this post helped! 🙂

TMART Reviews: Ostrich Pattern Gold-Chain Handbag

I don’t have a lot of bags at home. I don’t have too many requirements when looking for a bag, either. It just has to be roomy and sturdy, because I’m not exactly a good owner lol. So when TMART.com told me they’re sending me a bag for review, I immediately said yes. We’ve already heard so many online shopping horror stories so I thought it would be a good opportunity to check out the quality of the stuff TMART is selling. Right then and there I logged in to their website and went to the Shoulder & Handbags section. I wanted a simple black handbag that I can use both for work, school, and travel. I ultimately chose this design:

Fashion-Female-New-Special-Light-Bread-The-Mobile-Chain-Handbags-Ostrich-Pattern-Black_2_600x600Fortunately, the item was available. TMART processed the order on December 4, 2013 and arrived at the local post office on January 13, I believe. The postman left the claim card at my landlady’s mailbox on the 14th, but we only discovered it 4 days ago. So yeah, it took more than a month for the package to arrive, which is normal for me. It really does take 1 month or more for international packages to arrive at my place or at the post office.

IMGP0759.jpg

Upon claiming my package at the post office, the customs officer had to open the yellow bag to check what’s inside. I didn’t mind. I was too excited to see the bag so I hurried home afterwards. The bag was placed inside a fabric bag (?) and wrapped in plastic.

IMGP0761

And, tadaaaa! This is the actual item. It looks pretty good in my opinion and is very identical to the product photo posted on their website. Here’s the link: TMART Fashion Female New Special Light Bread The Mobile Chain Handbags Ostrich Pattern Black

IMGP0763

A closer look at the bag and seams would tell you that it is very well made. For Php 859.78 a piece, it’s a great buy. Anyway, below are the specs of the item as posted on the website:

Specifications

Material Leather, Metal
Style Handbags

Color Black
Weight 690 g / 24.34 oz

Package Includes

  • 1 x  Fashion Female Bag
  • 1 x Metal Chain
  • 1 x Leather Strap

IMGP0764

Indeed, the package came with a leather strap and a legit metal chain. The chain is a bit heavy, which is a relief because that would only mean it won’t easily break. It’s an important factor for me because I’m quite clumsy and can be very careless at times.

IMGP0765

The bag has three pockets, like what is stated in the product description, an inside and outside gold zipper, and a gold metal handle. The zippers are working perfectly, by the way.

IMGP0768

Here is how the bag looks like when using the leather shoulder strap (L) and the gold metal chain (R). I think the leather strap would be great for school while the other is for work and meetings. What do you think? I honestly can’t wait to use it!

By the way I made an unpacking video in case you want to see more of the item. Please ignore the noise. My very nice neighbor decided it’s time to wash her dishes just as I was filming. Hehe

ZALORA to Launch Marketplace (Press Release)

The online fashion retailer to offer independent fashion designers and sellers access to their millions of customers

ZALORA, Asia’s leading online fashion destination, has announced it will be launching ZALORA Marketplace in the first half of this year. With over 15 million visits per month to ZALORA, Marketplace will give independent fashion designers and sellers the opportunity to instantly expand their business to ZALORA’s massive customer base and will greatly increase the product assortment available to customers.

ZALORA Marketplace will allow vendors from all over Southeast Asia and Hong Kong to create their own branded storefront within the ZALORA site, which will be run and maintained by the seller with support from a dedicated ZALORA account manager. They will also benefit from a huge increase in brand exposure through free online marketing and advertising that will be part of ZALORA’s overall marketing campaigns.

zalora

Set to be one of the most beneficial fashion Marketplaces in Southeast Asia for independent fashion designers and sellers, customers across the region will also benefit from hundreds to potentially thousands of new products and brands available online without having to visit different shopping portals.

“The upcoming launch of ZALORA Marketplace is an exciting development for the fashion industry in Southeast Asia as whole,’ said Paulo Campos, Managing Director, ZALORA Philippines. “We are launching a platform where up and coming brands, boutiques or designers can sell their products alongside our internationally renowned brands, to an already highly established and loyal customer base. We have over 15 million visits to our ZALORA sites per month; for an independent fashion seller to have instant access to this kind of audience is a previously unheard of opportunity.”

A dedicated and localized ZALORA Fashion Scout force is currently searching for and recruiting potential brands and designers to come on board for launch.

“We have found some incredible and exciting designers and sellers so far,” said Campos. “We are really looking forward to working with them, nurturing them at this stage of the journey and seeing how far their business can expand through Marketplace.

LittleBlackDress_0

There has never been a better time than now to bring fashion retail businesses online, especially throughout Asia Pacific where the internet population is already over 200 million people and growing steadily. According to research* around 11%-15% of total global retail sales will be conducted through online channels by 2020, with Asia Pacific accounting for a very large portion of that. For fashion designers and sellers looking to expand their sales and reach, online is the only place to be.”

ZALORA Marketplace is currently open to applications from potential sellers and details can be found here.

Pure Heroine

So this was bound to happen. I’ve been wanting to name a blog post after Lorde for months but decided against it. I previously thought that doing so would only mean my obsession over her and her songs have reached an alarming rate. But I was wrong. Now since I’ve practically mangled her album, Pure Heroine, due to overplay and finally ready to move on to a new musical obsession, I can’t be any more happy than to dub this post Pure Heroine. This, however, doesn’t mean I don’t like Lorde anymore. I still do, and will just be waiting for the next album to wear out. Hehe. It’s funny and perplexing at the same time though how people accused Lorde of being pro-drugs because of her album title. Obviously, they confused it with the highly addictive drug, heroin. Hello, people, learn to spell. There could be some word play going on, so if anything, it’s witty.

IMGP0716

And speaking of wearing out, if you’re my housemate or officemate, you’ve probably seen me wear this look countless times. This whole outfit–from hat to shoes–is my current obsession. This is the most comfortable ensemble I’ve worn in a while. It’s very cold in the office and blazers, jackets, and sweaters are necessary to combat the chills. Our employers are not very strict when it comes to dress codes, we can wear practically anything, as long as our upper thighs aren’t showing lol.

IMGP0699

My friends know I love pink, but I always insist that it isn’t my favorite color. Weird, I know. Seriously, pink is like the happiest color and I like looking bright and happy. So imagine my delight when I saw World Balance carrying these adorable loafers! I mean, since when did this they produce this kind of style? Just late last year, apparently.

IMGP0701

It’s great that they’re trying to cater to non-sports enthusiasts aka lazy people’s needs (ehem *guilty*). World Balance is known for using materials of the highest quality, so why not let people like me experience their products? Good move, I must say.

This sweater was a gift (?) from my mom. Actually, she bought it for herself before the new year but since I’m a good daughter and she loves me very much, she let me have it. And I’ve been wearing it since, along with the jeggings. I swear, jeggings are a gift to mankind!

I wish I had more pictures to show, alas there’s no more. I was so busy with yesterday’s shoot. These photos were actually taken while on location and the others were busy retouching the model’s makeup. I can’t wait to show you the outcome  though! Stay tuned! 🙂

That Little Black Dress

The little black dress has become a wardrobe staple by women ever since Coco Chanel popularized it in the 1920s. The initial design Chanel published in Vogue in 1926 was just a simple, straight dress that falls just right at the calves.

chanel LBD

Today however, decades after it was introduced, the little black dress aka the LBD has undergone different transformations in terms of cut, length, and embellishments. While many manufacturers still subscribe to the original design, many LBDs available in the market are shorter, more body-hugging, more revealing, and more decorated that sometimes they tend to look tacky. However, many are still well-designed just like the following little black dresses I found on DressFirst.com, which will certainly suit women of various tastes.

The Ballerina

dressfirst4

This A-line LBD reminds me so much of the film The Black Swan. This dress is perfect for girls who want to show off a bit of skin while still looking chic and regal.

The Heiress

dressfirst2

This sequined dress is perfect for those girls who are fond of attending cocktail or corporate parties. The embellishments are balanced by the modest cut. Additionally, girls who want to show off their gorgeous collar bones may find this dress suitable for that agenda.

The Vixen

dressfirst3

This dress can make or break your outfit depending on the styling. Sexy LBDs like this do not need much accessorizing—a simple pair of earrings and bracelet would do the trick. After all, the main accessory for this kind of dress will be YOU.

The Sweetheart

dressfirst1

Designs like this will always be my favorite. It has all the qualities of the above-mentioned dresses. It has the right amount of embellishments—it may be a little short but it’s perfect for petite girls like me. The one-shoulder venus cut also provides the right amount of playfulness. This kind of LBD is fit for occasions such as the school prom; it’s definitely something sweet and fun girls would opt to wear.

DressFirst has a wide array of little black dresses to choose from. It’s important to remember though that to make an LBD standout, overaccessorizing is not very advisable. LBDs are usually great when paired with very minimal jewelry and simple shoes.

Happy new year everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and start to this new year, like I did. I know I’ve been pretty silent ootd-wise the past month, so I’m beginning my 2014 post with this outfit I wore on Christmas day at my mom’s hometown. If you follow me on Instagram though, I know you’ve seen this dress, which I also wore at my cousin’s wedding at Fernwood Gardens. My December was filled with family gatherings and traveling so I didn’t have a chance to blog properly, but I sure did enjoy the time I spent with my family and friends.

IMGP0331
Every Christmas day, it has become some sort of a family tradition that we all (and by all I mean with the whole extended family) gather around and exchange gifts. So my mom, sister, and I traveled to Tinambac for the event. When I and my siblings were kids, we always looked forward to Christmas Day because it’s the only time we get to receive presents. My aunts and uncles are the kindest and most generous people I know, they never forgot about us during holidays like this. But now that most of us have grown up and have jobs, we’re now the ones in charge of giving gifts to the younger generation:

My very cute, toothless cousins’ twinkling eyes and wide smiles when they got their presents were priceless. My sister and I were flat broke after, but it didn’t matter knowing that we made the children’s Christmas memorable. After all, giving is the true meaning of Christmas.

Before sunset, we decided to go to the beach, which was only 5 minutes away. It’s been a while since we last visited the place. I had fond memories of that beach, back when it was still clean and regularly maintained. Right now it only serves as port for fishermen’s boats so you’ll see lots of garbage lying around. 🙁

IMGP0318
Good thing we found a clean spot for outfit photos! Please excuse the eyebags and unkempt hair. I told you my schedule was heeeectic I didn’t even have enough time to sleep and comb my hair. Lol

Thanks to my sister for taking my photos and to my makulit cousin and mom for assisting us. Some dog pissed on a bag containing my belongings while we were shooting and next thing I knew my mom was chasing the dog. Lol. I seriously love the fact that my mother is very supportive of me. I know she’s already very confused of what I want to do with my life but she never complains. I love you, mom! 🙂

A Store for Every Girl

When people ask me what my style is, I usually don’t know how to answer. I dress depending on my mood so I cannot exactly identify my personal style. What I do know is I’m an avid fan of comfortable fashion. I commute everyday so I make sure that the pieces I wear do not restrict movement, thus I would usually go for soft, loose tops and pants; sometimes girly dresses and skirts when I’m feeling sad and happy–like this floral skirt from Fashion Diaries PH.

Prom Dress Shopping Tips for Petite Girls

A petite short girl will want to stick with a short dress for her prom. Wearing a long dress will make it hard to dance and will hide the girl’s legs. Ideally the skirt of the dress should fall either just above a girl’s knee or just below it.

okd604414_2

The shape most girls choose for their prom dress flatters their figure. Short girls like to wear empire waist dresses. Full skirts should be avoided by short girls. But if a girl chooses a full skirt the top of the dress should be tight. Backless dresses with spaghetti straps are a great choice for girls with a petite frame. Bateau short dresses are also a good choice for prom night.

The ideal way to look taller on prom night is to wear a dress with matching shoes. If they want a patterned dress it should be small. Many short girls choose to wear booties with their prom dress.

Dangly Earrings and Heels

Short dresses that show off a girl’s shoes should never be worn with an ankle strap shoe. Many petite girls choose to wear high heeled shoes to their prom. The accessories a girl chooses with her prom dress can make or break the whole dress. It is very important that any accessories worn with a prom dress do not detract from the dress itself. Accessories such as dangly earrings should be used to add a subtle touch to a prom outfit. Earrings should complement the dress.

Hair and Makeup

Finally, hair and makeup are important also. Many girls pile their hair on top of their head or simply have it curled. Makeup should match the dress and not be overwhelming. All of these elements come together nicely to make the perfect prom style.

Essential Accessories for the Fashionable Man

Staying current with today’s top trends is important to many men, and wearing the right clothes can certainly help keep you up-to-date with what the chicest men around are doing. What many men forget, however, is that accessories are just as important as clothing when it comes to looking stylish. Everything from the right belt to the right men’s eyeglasses can set you apart from all of the other men that are content with looking boring all the time. Here are some of the basic accessories that every fashion-conscious man should have in his closet.607825_lg

Trendy Glasses

Even if your eyes are perfectly fine and you don’t need vision correction, a sleek pair of glasses can be a great way to add interest to a basic outfit. Some of the most popular eyeglasses today are chunky and extra nerdy. These thick-rimmed, plastic frames are relatively low cost, so you can feel good purchasing a pair of glasses that you may not even need. The best thing about glasses is that they are easy to switch out and try some new styles. Don’t be afraid of going bold with your glasses, since you can stick with a neutral clothing choice and still look great.

Ties

Nothing dresses up an outfit like a nice tie, and having a little bit of extra variety can give you a huge range of color choices so that you can get extra creative. Wearing the same ties over and over can get pretty boring, and people may just start noticing – especially if you are prone to spills at meal time. Try branching out and trying some fun and interesting patterns and prints on your ties. Not only can you look dressed up with the right ties, but you can even look trendy by picking today’s hottest styles of cuts and colors.A10185221_lg

Sunglasses

This accessory is not just fashionable, but it is practical as well. Having a nice pair of sunglasses can not only keep you looking cool, but they can help to protect your eyes from sun damage, which is no fun for anyone. There are plenty of sources for low-cost sunglasses, so don’t feel like you have to spend a lot to look good. While spending a little more will get you some higher-quality sunglasses, you can have a greater variety by picking up one or two different styles of cheap frames.

A Watch

Investing in a high-quality, good looking watch is a great way to complete your wardrobe. While you may not use a watch to actually check on the time much anymore, thanks to smart phones, a nice watch looks really good with both a suit and a casual outfit.

Shoes

Many men are content with owning a pair of work shoes and a pair of casual shoes, but you don’t have to stick with just a pair or two. Try looking for some interesting new shoes that will draw attention to your personal sense of style. If you usually only wear casual shoes, why not pick a dressier pair just to switch things up a bit. Don’t be afraid of thinking outside of the box to create some interesting outfit combinations.

Shimmer and Shine: Ten Fashion Looks That Light Up Your Christmas

During the festive seasons, there are dinners, happy hours and get-togethers with friends and family, all crammed within a few short weeks in November and December. Of course, you cannot forget the office party, which has made a comeback after years of being shelved due to the financial crisis. With all these invitations, it’s difficult to fit them all in your oversubscribed schedule.

You also want to want to make a good impression when you attend these events. Finding just the right Christmas party dresses can be a real challenge. Fortunately you have numerous choices that allow you to stand out whether you’re schmoozing with your boss at the office party or snuggling with that special someone over an intimate dinner for two.289975501

The Little Black Dress

It’s difficult to go wrong with the iconic little black dress. The little black dress can go effortlessly from office to the club. Whether you go with bare shoulders or crushed velvet, there is an LBD that has your name on it.

The Little Red Dress

With all the gray skies and slushy snow, the winter could do with a little color. Stand out from the sea of black in a little red dress. When you wear a little red dress, you will automatically command attention – perhaps even from your longtime crush.

The Little Gold Dress

When the invitation says “festive attire” and you want to look elegant without going for a full-length ball gown, what are your options? A little gold dress could be just the ticket. Sweep your hair into an elegant updo, add simple jewelry and shoes and you’re done.

Elegant Long Dresses and Skirts

For those white tie and black tie occasions, only an elegant long dress will do. You can wow the crowd in a sweeping ball gown in black, red or a beautiful jewel tone. Or opt for a body skimming sheath with a discreet slit to show just a flash of your legs.

Shimmery Tops and Skirts or Slacks

For a festive look suitable for less formal occasions, choose a shimmery or glittery top. Pair it with a short or long skirt to mimic the look of a cocktail dress. Or pair your top with slacks and a jacket to keep away the chill while maintaining a festive look.

Dressing for the Office Holiday Party

289542593The key to proper dress for the office holiday party dressing for the office party is to remember each of the two words: office and party. It is still a work-related affair. This means that plunging necklines, too short hemlines and too-tight anything are off limits. On the other hand, it’s a party, so you are expected to dress up. Translation: a little black dress that hits a few inches above the knee is fine. A skimpy black number cut to the navel and barely covering your bum? Not so much.

Pajamas: Not Just for Bedtime

Of course, you would never roll out of bed and show up at a party wearing your pajamas. Or would you?  Beautiful gold-colored gowns with a satiny sheen, or silky pajama bottoms in black or a jewel-toned color can absolutely make their way to your next occasion, and no one would ever suspect.

Crushed Velvet

Few fabrics are as inherently luxurious as velvet. Whether you opt for a black velvet dress or a crushed velvet jacket, you instantly look dressed up no matter what else you are wearing. A velvet skirt and jacket are ideal for a sit down dinner party. While black is always appropriate, crushed velvet also looks glamorous in jewel tones like green or blue. Red or even gold crushed velvet jackets are eye-catching when matched with black skirts or pants. White velvet is a lovely alternative for daytime affairs.

Leather

For elegance with a bit of an edgy appeal, rescue your leather skirt from the back of the closet. Pair it with a silky top or a soft angora sweater and you will look sexy and elegant all at once. Dress up a leather jacket by pairing it with smooth wool slacks and a glittery top. Plain pumps or flats to match the jacket complete the look.

Ugly Sweaters

Yes, ugly sweater parties are all the rage. From reindeer-covered creations to colors that seem to have been inspired by a fever dream, the motto for ugly sweater parties is the uglier, the better.  The best part of an ugly sweater party invite is that you likely already have suitable attire stashed in the back of your closet.

Maroon Valley

Christmas is just a few days away so I decided to wear a color I never wore for an outfit post before. I don’t know exactly why I had not tried it because I actually like maroon a lot. There’s something about it that gives me warm fuzzies, reminds me so much of love and celebration during Christmas time.

IMG_3579

It’s also my school color—kinda weird hearing myself saying “my” school though. About 10 years ago, I only dreamed of becoming an Isko, the term used to call people who study at the University of the Philippines. Now here I am living just outside its gates and literally attending classes. They say dreams don’t wait. Maybe some, but I’ve always believed that we can achieve anything, at any age, as long as we persevere.

IMG_3560I haven’t achieved all of my goals yet, but I can sense that I’m getting there. Sometimes I would even feel very restless when I don’t have anything productive scheduled in a day, especially during my break from work. It always feels like I wasted an opportunity to do something worthwhile. So being in graduate school helps lessen that feeling of restlessness.

IMG_3568Otherwise, you would find me in the mall or in front of my computer looking at clothes. And that’s exactly what happened to me last week. I wasn’t supposed to buy anything before next week but I couldn’t help it when I saw this bag at Dorothy Perkins. I’ve been searching for a good black bag, so when I saw this I knew I had to get it. Same goes for these Bershka maroon pants that I got from Branded for Less and bowler hat.

IMG_3565

Every day it’s becoming increasingly cold here in the Philippines so I took out my fantastic furry sweater which I bought for a very low price from an online tiangge. These pretty shoes, on the other hand, are from World Balance. Honestly, I’m not a big fan of sportswear because I’m not a very sporty person. But I was so surprised when I found out that World Balance actually has a line of shoes fit for girly women like me. As many of you would expect, I chose the pair with pink on it. I just thought these would be perfect when I finally sign up to a yoga class. They’re very comfortable, and the insoles feel incredibly soft. And it meshed well with the whole outfit, too. World Balance has just released their Sports Active and Street Casual Collection and I’m pretty sure there’s a pair there you’d be interested in. You can check them out on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
