Patterns + Dots (and a Few Unrelated Stuff)

For the past couple of days, I’ve been watching documentaries about the horrific shooting rampage in Columbine High School and Virginia Tech University, both in the United States. I know they’re old news but it still bothers me why those young kids resorted to those crimes. I’ve learned from research and documentaries that these kids, namely Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold (Columbine), and Seung-Hui Cho (Virginia Tech) were most probably “bullied” and depressed children, who took revenge by killing their schoolmates. Cho, however, was a stuggling writer. He’s so passionate about the craft but never accepted that he still had a lot of things to improve on. He also had selective mutism, a disorder that prevents a person to speak in some situations but is normally capable of speech. He only had one friend throughout his college life, excluding his English mentor, Lucinda Roy, who painstakingly tutored him on his writing. It struck me when Roy noted how disturbing it is that Cho, a very anti-social person, is desperate to be noticed though his work. I guess that’s really how some people think. It’s just that, maybe, Cho’s psychological state worsened, the same thing holds true for Eric and Dylan. His anxiety disorder and depression mutated into something more dangerous that lead him to commit a gruesome act.

Depression is something that should not be ignored, bullying included. I’ve seen the effect of it on people a lot times, one was firsthand. I could be pretty depressed at times too, but it is always good to have a support system—friends, loved ones—who are willing to divert your attention to something else. I’m quite thankful actually that I’m always busy. I barely have the time to wallow in self-pity. I have my friends, the boyfriend, my blog, and many fun activities to focus on—e.g., outfit shooting! (HAHA. Segue!)

Okay, so I will stop bombarding you with my thoughts. Anyway, one thing I do before I wear a risky garment outside of the house is I take pictures. No kidding. I don’t trust my mirror, so I turn to the camera for a second opinion.

These trousers could be easily mistaken for a table cloth! Trololol. If not worn right.

I’ve always believed that trousers like these, a.k.a harem pants, are not meant for short people to wear. It makes people look a bit wider and shorter, and midget ones like me can’t afford to look like a dwarf. Please, all we want in life is grow a few inches more. Hahaha. But then again, I don’t want to be limited just because of my lack of height, so I turned to my nude heels to see if I could rock these pants.

What do you think?

Added a few more edginess to the look by wearing this winged skull connector ring and animal print bangles.

Adorned the whole looked with humongous nerd glasses and bow headband for some quirky touch.

I don’t know how to make that sexy bed hair. Would anyone like to teach me?

Pinoy Manga: SLASH (Plus Giveaway! :D)

Many Pinoys know,  including me, that mangas are made and distributed exclusively by Japan. By origin, yes,  they truly are from Japan, but not anymore today.

In the West, manga is equivalent to comics, only that the former was originally written in Japanese or by a Japanese author.  After the World War II, mangas reached out to a wider audience, particularly men and children. Many of the cartoon television shows we see at present are adapted from mangas.

Their popularity and massive following inspired Filipinos to create their own. These creators  gather in an annual event called Komikon. In that event, comic artists display their works and they also get the chance of garnering awards for their work.

My friend and former officemate participates in this event. He is the artist of the Pinoy manga Slash. Below is the manga cover.

SLASH (SOUL-LINKED AEGIS SUPPORTING HEGEMONY), is a mysterious power that prevents a person from being harmed or killed, an enhancement for combat and is used to enforce authority among the weak. It can determine one’s social superiority to one who possesses it. Not all may have it. Alizeti ekilore, a rich innocent girl from trifang mansion, suddenly discovered she has it since she survived a strong explosion that killed all her family. Now that she had survived and obtained such power, Alizeti decided to pursue the murderer of her family using her SLASH. Clash, a veteran slasher(SLASH user), will help alizeti use and strengthen her SLASH in order to find the culprits. Will they succeed in getting justice for alizeti’s family if the killers are the government‘s strongest Slashers? Will alizeti and clash be able to fully understand and utilize their SLASH to counteract their pursuers? In a society where SLASH enhancement and slashers are made, alizeti and clash will experience the inevitable.

Cheap Thrills

Perhaps one of the fears of shoppers when buying affordable items is that they might look as cheap as the ones they bought. That could happen though, that is if you’re not very careful of what you’re buying. Accessories and clothes that are priced Php 200 and below could be very tempting, especially if the design appeals to your taste. I am a sucker for cheap things and I must admit I’ve bought some that do not “live” long unfortunately. This happened many times and I have learned my lesson.

Would you believe that this whole outfit, including the accessories, only cost me Php 300? No kidding. 🙂

Cheap stuff with adorable designs are rare. When I go to bazaars, I would usually roam around the whole place and rummage through pile of clothes and hanged items. Great finds are oftentimes hidden, hence the term ‘finds’.

I always keep in mind the following when purchasing:

1. When I find the design that I want, I check the seams, e.g, armpits, edges, shoulders, neck, etc. They have to be at least properly sewn or can be easily repaired.

2. Look for discolorations, tears, and other damages. Items with damages are not worth your money.

3. Fit them. It is a must to try on the items before paying for them to prevent you from feeling any regret. There are some clothes that only look nice in mannequins or models. Sadly, most people do not possess the same physique.

All things bought from bazaars

Lastly, make sure you are comfortable in them. Sometimes, no matter how gorgeous an item is, if you don’t feel good in it, it’ll show. For me, comfort is always a must. It does not only make you feel at ease, but it also helps you think of other ways to style/wear it.

To sum this post up, always keep in mind the following, aside from price and design: textile quality, fit, and comfort. Ciao! 🙂

My Everyday Make-up (Video Tutorial)

Most men dislike girls who wear make-up.  That’s a fact. Last year though, I was able to “perfect” a barely-there make-up that can be worn everyday. Chad would always tell me how much he loves my make-up because, according to him, I still have that natural glow after application. Well, he’s right. The problem with wearing make-up is that even though it enhances beauty and hides imperfections, everybody knows it’s not your “real face” they’re seeing. Hence, they exclaim: Uy, ‘di kita nakilala ah. Ang ganda mo ‘te! Haha. I dunno if I’d be happy with that one.

Also, there are women who, unfortunately, have very sensitive skin. Some could not handle too many cake and powder on their skin, causing them to get allergies and irritations. So with all these in mind, I thought, hey, maybe I could share to everyone my everyday make-up–foundation-free! I may not have sensitive skin, but I don’t like layers on my face and feel eeky sticky at the end of the day. I’ve been wearing this look for a year now and I must say it has worked wonders for me.

Below is a video tutorial I made yesterday. I have also indicated below the instructions, in case you don’t get to read the subtitles. I hope you find this helpful! 🙂

STEP ONE: Cleanse and tone. Never put on make up without washing your face first. I use Nivea Acne Oil Control Facial Wash and Nivea Refreshing Toner.

STEP TWO: Moisturize. Any moisturizer will do. I use POND’S Flawless White Blemish Prevention UV Cream.

STEP THREE: Conceal. Use a concealer that matches your skin tone to hide imperfections. I use BasicBeauty concealer stick in Light.

STEP FOUR: Apply blush. Blush powders are easier to work with than cheek tints. I would recommend Ever Bilena’s Rose blush powder. Smile! Then, apply blush on the apples of your cheeks.

STEP FIVE: Line lippies. Others would tell you to use a lip liner darker than your lipstick. I don’t follow that though. I use Ianti’s lip liner in Nude. It matches all lip colors.

STEP SIX: Apply nude lipstick. I am obsessed with Nudes. Here, I’m going to use Ianti’s Nude lipstick. I use it as my lipstick base, if there is such a thing. 😛

STEP SEVEN: Choose a shade that resembles your lip color. As you can see, I overuse Elf’s peach lip color. Hehe. It looks natural but, at the same time, refreshing. 🙂

STEP EIGHT: Define eyebrows. I’m partial to brown eyebrow pencils. The color makes people look younger (I think).

STEP NINE: Apply mascara and define lashline. I’ve been using Nichido ColorEyes mascara duo stick for years. It’s very affordable but always delivers. I don’t use eyelash curlers by the way; I just apply mascara in upward direction, but you’re free to use one if you want. 🙂 I always use the liquid one when defining my upper lashline. To create the perfect line, stretch the skin a bit then apply liner as shown. Remember, the goal is to look natural, so do not apply too much. Just follow the contours of your lashline.

STEP TEN: Set make-up by applying powder. These actually do the trick–Yep, a brush and loose powder. It does not rob the skin of ITS natural glow, unlike when we use foundation and/or pressed powder. Do not forget to apply powder on your neck. 🙂

OPTIONAL: Highlight nose bridge. While others would use brown make-up to highlight the contours of their nose, I use my concealer. ‘Learned it from a few make-up artists. 😛 Apply, then blend. 🙂

2012 Golden Globe Awards Best Dressed List

Indeed, time flies so fast. It was only last year since I started this blog and vowed to give you guys an update of the Golden Globe Awards. And now, the 2012 Golden Globe Awards has concluded and the winners have been revealed. Check out the list of winners at the bottom of this post.

On to my main subject—the Best Dressed list. I only picked out my top 5 choices though, as there were only a few good ones to choose from. It puzzles me how some Hollywood celebrities make awful choices when it comes to their wardrobe. I mean, hey, they are like the highest paid celebrities in the world and they can’t hire a decent stylist? Not that I’m a good dresser myself, but you understand what I mean, right?

The fifth spot would go to Kate Beckinsale. She chose a Roberto Cavalli gown and matched her look with diamond bracelets and earrings.

My fourth choice would be this Basil Soda dress worn by E! personality and Fashion Police panelist Giuliana Rancic. I’m digging the torso details, which give a conservative yet sophisticated vibe.

This is my third. Oh viva Versace! Haha. Aside from Nicole Kidman looking sexxxay in this dress, I also love how the torso details were constructed. It looks so structured, prolly because of the diagonal bodice cuts you see. I’m not sure though about the gold detailing/studs(?)—they look a bit over-the-top to me, which could be the reason why she kept her accessories minimal. Balance is key.

Second, one perfect example of a celebrity who always gets it right is Angelina Jolie. If you watched last year’s GGAs, then you could recall her looking so stunning in a sparkly green dress. This look of hers is no different. She was jaw-dropping in this year’s Golden Globes, thanks to this Atelier Versace gown. I’m not really a fan of satin or any glossy fabric, but the pop of red won me over.

And my top best dressed gal is no other than my forever girl crush Charlize Theron, who graced the red carpet in Dior Haute Couture gown and vintage Cartier jewels. The way her hair was styled is impeccable. Truly, she looked like a real Grecian or Greek goddess, if I may say.

So there are my best dressed ladies. But I think though there’s one girl who deserves a special mention. I’ve never really seen her as a fashion icon, but her look at last night’s GGAs is refreshing:

Yep, it’s indeed Zooey Deschanel! I loved how she showed her quirky and unique sense of style. This Prada dress complete with black and green embellishments stayed true to her personality.
